Finally Microsoft is providing the free antivirus that should have been part of the Windows OS.

Just installed it and it looks very lean, just basic antivirus and no other junk. Looks to be using only about 4MB of memory here in Vista 32-bit.

Should work nicely in Windows 7 as well.

I will probably go with this (or some other free alternative) once my norton expires. I love my norton but I never visit any fishy websites. Hope it performs decently.

Just put it on 3 of my machines. No issues so far. Had a version of TrendMicro through an old work license that I was happy to uninstall.

How exactly will you test it?
I mean, you can see if it causes stability problems.
But how will you know if it is combating viruses properly?
"Uh, it hasn't found any viruses, so it's working great, I guess..."

Hmm it says

This beta is available only to customers in the United States, Israel (English only), People's Republic of China (Simplified Chinese only) and Brazil (Brazilian Portuguese only).

I see why
Microsoft is targeting it at the first 75,000 US, Israel and Brazil based customers. A Chinese beta will be available in mid July. Similar to the Windows 7 beta it is likely the company will expand the offering to meet demand.

I stand corrected - MsMpEng.exe, the service is taking anywhere from 40-60 megs of memory consistently. While both the AVG services (avgnt and avguard) are taking 13 megs combined.
