My friend uses the Outlook express 6 with his Rogers Yahoo! Mail. He complained to me with regards to all the spam emails that he is getting every day. Since his email is fixed (non changeable) and it is being used for business purposes, I'd like to know if there are any solutions to fix the problem. He also notified me that he can only use Outlook as that is the only software that he is familiar with.

After doing some quick searches I'd noticed that the freeware thread's antispam section is down. Here are some questions that I have.

Should I purchase Outlook 2007 for him? I heard that Outlook 2007 have this antispam feature which is supposed to be really good. Is it free? I would like to keep the cost of the whole thing low.

Also, I need someone to recommend me other security solutions that mixes well with Outlook. Currently my friend has Outlook express 6 and the Norton anti virus crashes whenever he receives an email that comes from Yahoo. Any firewall and anti virus solutions that are free and works with XP and Outlook nicely? Thanks :)

I suggest SpamFighter.

Any firewall and anti virus solutions that are free and works with XP and Outlook nicely?
Firewall: A router, if you want a software firewall as well, check out Comodo

AntiVirus: Kaspersky is currently my suggested Antivirus application and it is now FAR (Free after Rebate). You can use the free trial while you wait for it to come in, all you will have to do when it arrives is enter the license key into the trial version to activate the subscription. If you do not want to wait for a rebate, AntiVir would be my suggestion for a freeware antivirus (for home users). Follow these instructions (by forum member John) on how to disable the antivir popup. Antivir does not scan incoming email in its freeware version, but it will protect against the execution of malware.

For detection rate tests for antivirus products, please see The AntiVirus Detection Rate Thread.

Also, try using yahoo mail with YahooPops.

Since the computers will be working under a business environment, they would rather purchase big names like Outlook 2007 instead of third party software like SpamFighter. Do anybody have experience with Outlook's antispam filter? Are they function well and gets constant updates? I just checked and noticed that my friend's version of Outlook is too old (Outlook 2002 instead of Express 6). and it won't support the antispam function from Microsoft.

For the firewall the company already has a firewall up running. I guess the integrated firewall from XP should be sufficient.

AntiVir looks good to me even the income email scan isn't included.

Still looking for more inputs with regards to antispam solutions and Outlook 2007. :)

Sorry, but I did not catch that this was for a business environment when I posted (just glanced over your OP)

Spamfighter is a plugin for outlook and outlook express, it cant work without outlook. But it does not matter, I just recalled that SpamFighter is free for private use (home users) only.

It is excellent, I have used it since the 2003 version. It gets updated regularly via Microsoft update (probably autoupdate as well).

Does not matter, you cannot use it in a business environment (the free one that is), private home users only. The corporate version that you can use in a business environment (not free) includes email scanning & spyware protection.

The only AntiVirus that I am aware of that is free to use in a business environment would be ClamWin and the only protection that it offers other than manual scanning is a plugin for outlook to scan emails (no real-time protection against the execution of malware).

Outlook 2007's filter when used in its "High: Most junk e-mail is caught, but some regular mail may be caught as well." is very good. I rarely get a single piece of spam in my inbox. But on top of that I also have SpamAssassin which my hosting company uses for e-mail which also is a second layer to combating spam.
