X-Scan, courtesy of SpyWareInfo.com is a good, free, ActiveX based Spyware scanner. I've used it to find stuff that Lavasofts AdAware missed.

Only problem is that SpyWareInfo seems to be down atm...

Big fan of AVG, along with Spybot and Adaware. AVG caught virsuses for me that my previous version of Norton (updated daily, on 24/7 with frequent full scans) missed. Spybot and Adaware got rid of a lot of junk-presumedly from stuff my kids installed.

Haven't tried any of the others.

Pretty much all of the freeware/shareware spyware applications
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html

A little trick I've used for a while now....on the Norton Antivirus 2004 CD, there's a directory called prescan. Before you install NAV, it uses the files in this directory to scan for viruses to make sure it gets a clean install. Copy that directory and you've got a modular virus scanner that you can update manually. To run the scanner, navigate to the Prescan/support/prescan.exe. To update the virus definitions, download the intelligent updater from symantec.com. Extract the files inside the exe (using winrar or the like) into the prescan/virusdef folder. You can use it to build virus reports and/or remove viruses. I still suggest using Kapersky or F-prot for real protection, but this prescan is nice and easy when you've got a friend or family member who has a virus ridden computer that won't allow you to install anything.

EXCELLENT Site and Service for all of us!

Thank you for doing this and allowing others to learn from it. I am a waterfowl hunter and on a Yahoo List (wildfowl) and one of our members had issues the other day and I tried to assist BUT I will now point him to your site if that is okay?/!

Avoid IE and you'll have fewer spills to mop up.

Don't forget the freeware scanner Bazooka. It won't remove the spyware but I always run it as a last check that the system is clean.
