Free Air vs Enclosured Subwoofers, 20" rims + supercharger question

I own a 93 ls-400. We recently installed our old 2 12" W-3 JL's. HOWEVER, stupid of me, I found out during the installation process that the gas tank separates the trunk to the backseat. (DOH!) Therefore, we don't get the "whoomf" that we were hoping for.

Therefore, I am asking for suggestions to this problem

1) Should I reposition the gas-tank (probably gonna b the last option)

2) Add 2 more W-3 and another performance tekniq amp?

3) Buy 2 12" freeair subs and mount it facing up on top of the back little area in the behind the backseat area?

4) Remove the backseats and put the box in there?

What is the most cost-effective way to approach this problem. I'm thinking of spending around $2k for this (including replacement of the four speakers, buying a new headunit (+ the custom installation of a headunit) and a new 4 channel amp to work with the other 2 channel amp we own.

Another question:

What 20" rims and tires do you recommend. I'm looking to spend $5-6k MAX on these.

Last question:

Ok, the need for speed has hit me. I'm THINKING (important word: THINKING!) of modifyin the engine. I need help since this is a Lexus. The total I can spend for engine modifications if taking in fact the other money I'm gonna commit on audio and rims is around $5-6k. Remember, this is a V-8 260 hp i believe.

thanks

Free air subs will give you flat response down VERY low, but won't be quite as tight as a sealed box sub. Free air subs are usually one of the top SQ performers, along with transmission lines and aperiodic enclosures.

First and most important questions; what kinda music do you listen to, and what kinda sound do you want? How much sound is important as well 🙂

i'm a non-audiophile person 🙂 I'm thinking of switching all the 4-speakers with infinity kappas. How much do those run? That is why I probably need another 4-channel amp.

I'm more of the whoomf type of person. I'm young, I wanna make my car kinda loud and shaking 😉 I was told audiobahn (sp?) was a good brand, along with eclipse (sp?)...but can you inform me wat is good and where in so-cal is a good place to get "good" deals and INSTALLATION <--very very important

Basically, I wanna be able to rattle the car at my disposal (but, of course, my ears sometimes won't let me)

also, wat does "Free air subs are usually one of the top SQ performers, along with transmission lines and aperiodic enclosures." mean?

thank

Static911: I'm not sure about the supercharger on the Lexus. You'd have to talk to TRD about it or try to surf some Lexus boards. If you have the money, I'm sure TRD could whip up a S/C for you, but it would cost a LOT!!

As for the 20inch rims, depending on where you live I'd be wary of them. If you live in an area with a lot of potholes then those rims could get damaged quickly. And also if you get 20inch rims, you'd have low profile tires correct? And you'd also wanna lower the LS400, cause it would look too high with rims those big. That might run into another problem. If you have those auto-levelling suspension then I'm not sure what your options are to lower it.

For the sound system: you best bet would be to goto a local car-audio specialist and talk to him about what your options are. Although I'm pretty sure your current setup with 2 JL-12s should be more than enough, you may want more.

please tell me they sheeted the tank off?

you should still get decent sound so long as the tank wasn't brushing against the sheeting.

if you are particular about 'noise' might I suggest something else.. some nice headers/pipes and muffs. although I'm not sure what a flowmaster 40 comparable would be like on a LEXUS, but it would be cool to try it out.. you'd probably be the first with a lexus that sounded that cool.
