Saw this on a different board, but didn't see it here -

Anyway, because of the FCC's "must carry" rules DISH is required to carry ALL local channels in any market that it carries ANY of them in. Since they've exceeded their capacity on their current sats (delays in launching additional says also impacted this issue). they're broadcasting the addditional channels not offered before to their previuos markets on their side orbital sats. You can find what stations are on the side sats for your city: 61.5° location (Eastern US) and here for the 148° (Western US) location.

HDTV and many international channels (you need to subscribe in order to see them) are also transmitted on the side orbital slots. You'd normally have to pay $150 and up for the equipment and installation.

Just got off the phone w/ the CSR ? I went round and round with him for about a minute. After I finally got him to offer one for free he admitted that you have to do a few things:

1) You must already be a ?locals? subscriber.
2) You must tell them you want a specific station (you must identify it by its call letters) that is on one of the other satellites.
3) They are told to respond that it?s not available on the satellite(s) that you are presently receiving.
4) You must then tell them that you want to get that additional satellite feed. They then can offer the additional dish and install for free.

They don?t seem to be overwhelmed with requests in my area (North of Chicago). They offered to install it as early as next Tuesday morning. I asked about just getting the equipment and installing it myself; they gave the standard reply that that?s between you and your installer.

Also, how do I find out which local channels are not covered by the current sattelite(I have DIshPVR)...
What is the value of that switch? Can i connect 2 receivers using it?

I would assume that it is an sw21 switch, which is used to combine 2 satellite feeds into one cable. This will not enable you to add an additional receiver. However, if you already have multiple receivers connected via a switch, you can install this switch before the other switch, and you will get everything from the 61.5 (or 148) satellite on all of your receivers. I am not sure how this would work with a dish 500 lnb which has the switch built in, I think you might need a different switch to connect the feed from 61.5/148 to both receivers. Since they are giving you free installation, you could ask the installer these types of questions, but from what I hear, those guys don't usually know much.

Original post was @ FW.

What follows is a new listing of all local channels and the sats used. As you know from the letter they sent you, the "New" locals start in 8000 range.

Dish network complete channel list with sat's used -

Channel list w/sats used

I have heard from some that received the installed equipment,
that they are giving you another Dish500 along with a switch 64!
To get the second bird, they only "need" to give you the older
Dish300 and either 2 switch 21's if you have a twin already, or
swap out the 2 duals for a twin, and another pair of switch 21's.

The switch 64 with power inserter and power supply, cost around
$150 alone, and allows 3 birds on 4 IRD's. Dish500's go for around
$80 (delivered) on e8ay. Total value over $200.

Others stated that the installer went the cheapest route possible.

If you are already receiving locals through 110, the only other benefit of doing this would be to pick up the HDTV channels on 148/61.5 (and which satellite you pick up depends on geography, East/West)? The only HDTV channels are Showtime, HBO, and a PPV, and any over-the-air HD channels local to my market. Am I missing anything else? In addition to the free dish, this would require an upgraded TV, new sat. receiver, and an over-the-air antenna. So a cold deal in that respect if you aren't affected by the local channels issue.

Actually, in my market (Chicago) by taking them up on their offer for free equipment I'm almost doubling the local channels that I can now receive (and am paying for anyway). If later I chose to get channels on the additional sat then I don?t have to pay for the extra dish, Dual LNB?s and the most expensive item, the additional switch.

If you so chose, you could even sell the free equipment and make a good buck in the process.

I'm a little confused, but would LOVE this b/c I want the HDTV , but didn't want to install another dish myself.
I live in NY, and subscribe to the locals, what channel(s) should I tell them that I want but am not receiving?

thanks you VERY much

<< Original post was @ FW. >>

Thanks for saving me the trouble of reposting my post here. :)

Again, to see what channels are on which bird, check out this list.
Channels list with sat used!
Start at the 8000's, as that is where they are relocating the locals.
With Dish 500, you currently get all the locals on 119 and 110.
Look at the list and see if any other locals in your area are listed using 61.5 or 148.
If you see some on those birds that are in your area, those are the ones to ask for when you call.

There are benefits to this.
In most area's, prior to Jan 1, we all got the 4 major locals only, and on 110.
Then with this new law, they added more locals.
2 were added to 110, and 2 were added to 61.5.
So to get all of your locals, you need to hit the 3rd bird.

The other benefit is the equipment value.
At the least, with minimum parts, it's over $60 value.
But, if you get hooked up with Dish500 and SW64, it's over $230 value.
Like all Hot Deals, it could go either way.

Call, tell them you noticed they added local channels that you pay for but cant get because they are on a different Sat and you would like to get it. She asked specifically for the channel and I told her WLNY tv 55 NY. She said ok you need another dish, I said no charge, she said no charge. That was it, basically like the 1s poster stated. :D

I know you are talking Dish but DTV just went to a spot beam system where locals are spot beamed over each city. THis is how they now carry all locals using single dish. THey even offer locals for here in Memphis where dish doesn't. THey are both good systems though. Just wanted to add that DirecTV is now offerring tons of locals all with single dish.

I just scored this too, in NJ. It went like this:

Me: "Hi, I currently pay for the local NYC stations, and I noticed you are adding a bunch of locals that I can't see for some reason (playing dumb) because they are on another satellite or something?"

Dish: "Well sir, what station were you looking for."

Me: "well, for one, WLIW 21"

Dish: Tap tap tap. "Were there any others???"

Me: "Well, I really like PBS stations!"

Dish: "ok, ok...." more tapping

Dish: "Ok I can have an installer out there on 2/4 between 8-12 or 12-5 to install your new dish"

Me: "Whoa, another dish?? (Still playing dumb) How much is that gonna cost????"

Dish: "That will be no charge."

Me: "SWEET! Ahem, I mean, that's good.":D:D:D

This works folks. Props to DAKn2 and RobsTV! This is a hot deal!

Check out A consumers guide at DBSForums.com
Also check out the forum at Interesting Devices

DTV is currently using 3 sat's, while Dish uses 4.
Dish uses Dish 500 to get more than one, while DTV uses DTV Plus to get more then one.
Each sat can only handles so many channels.
Once a point is reached, a new sat must be used.
Since Dish transmits many more channels then DTV, the 2 main sats, 110 and 119, are filled up.
Spot beam sucks. Locals are only picked up in that city, (or close to it).
With Dish, and a $45 adaptor, (search other sites, don't ask), you get locals from every city.
This is because they don't use spot beam (yet), and the same data gets sent to "every city".
So with Dish, you can actually pickup close to 600 to 800 local channels.
This allows you to watch a show in any time zone, as well as any local sports team.
With DTV you get maybe a dozen tops, no matter what equipment you are using.

Too bad in the Bay Area the earliest they could schedule my install is 2/20. I had to add locals for $5.99 and request an obscure local station. I'll have a massive dish farm at my house. I hope with the new dish, I'll get all four birds.

DirecTV with Tivo and UltimateTV, Dish with I like 9 and AT&T cable and broadband. No, I don't watch much TV. :D

Awesome deal, thanks.

Do you have a SKU number for it?
I have an old coupon for radioshack.com and I can't find the adapter anywhere on the site...
Thanks.

This is awesome! I had a friendly (playing dumb) chat with the CSR. It went like this:

Me: "Hi, I am currently paying for the local Detroit stations and can't seem to get WADL-TV 38."

CSR: "You are currently receiving ABC, CBS, NBC, WB...." (Trying to avoid install)

Me: "Yes, but I noticed that your local channels include WADL. How can I get this channel?"

CSR: "You will need a new dish."

Me: "Oh, really... Well what does that mean?"

CSR: "We can install a new dish and switch for you to receive that channel, for no charge."

Me: "Ok, lets go ahead and do that!"
