Those 50x Prime Peripherals CD-Roms are great. They are made by Afreey, have a high Digital Audio Extraction rate, are CloneCD compatible (can read subchannel info). They spin up a bit noisy, but are pretty quick. I bought one at $30. Well worth getting, IMHO.

Be careful with the rebate from Prime Peripheral. Keep copies in case they don't send it. They've been known not to follow through.

I would wager that it is an OfficeMax rebate for the CD-ROM drive. If so, they are among the quickest; I usually get their rebates back in 6 weeks.

Chipmaker for the modem is ???

OfficeMax stopped doing Rebates last Oct/Nov timeframe. Now all they do is point you to the vendor's rebate coupon house.

Hi folks,

I need a cdrom, the free 50X is perfect. Does the sale start on the 11th? Does office Max do the 14 day price match? Basically, I'm wondering if I should buy it ahead of time and then return it on the day of the sale to get the sale price. I would hate to miss out on this deal.

Thanks for the feedback.

Buy it now - then do the 14 day price guarantee thing. It's the only way you'll get one at a B&M without being there when the doors open on Sunday.

Buying ahead of the herd sounds great to me, but how does the pricematch work if the rebate says "Purchased between X and Y" and your receipt says Z-X?

Sorry for all the variables, we engineers are wacked!

Can you buy it now and then return it on Sunday and say "I bought this the other day and I would like to return it and re-purchase it so I can get the rebate"? ...Can they refuse you? I am sure someone has experience doing this?

That is the way to go...to avoid having to get up at 9:30 and wait by the door with the other wolves!

There has been a lot of discussion in these forums about buying early and returning an item during the period the rebate is offered. Whether you can do this depends on the individual store -- not on whether you can return the unopened product for credit or cash back -- but whether they will allow you to turn right around and repurchase it to get the dated sales receipt you need. My CompUSA store knowingly goes along with this tactic, BestBuy will not and I doubt that either of the OM's here would either; they are sort of prickish about rebates anyway. It doesn't cost you anything -- except time -- to try, but it may not work. I have used the tactic successfully at CompUSA. Circuit City is very lenient in interpreting the rules -- the best in my opinion.

Thanks Gustavus. That tactic is kind of a "gray area" that is hard to predict how stores will deal with you. I appreciate the scouting report, although I have to admit I never thought CC would be "the best" at it. Maybe I have been too hard on that store (I had an "incident" several years ago that has soured me on them).

I have never had to do that because I was always one of the fools who waits in the line...and the idea never occurred to me until I read this thread. And to think, I have been doing it the other way for YEARS. Of course, I like the feeling of being near the front of the line at CUSA and then just lift up your feet and let the crushingly tight crowd carry me through the front doors and to my goodies:D

A note on the Prime Peripherals rebate. Do keep copies of everything and keep track of it. When the 8 weeks or whatever is up CALL THEM. I have done literally hundreds of rebates and I've got to say Prime Peripherals has been the worst to deal with. I have done 3 with them eventually gotten them but never without a phone call. Amazingly when I do call they always say "your check will be mailed tomorrow." Then, about 3 or 4 weeks later I get my check. Don't waste your time with their online tracking site. I've never heard back on any of the inquiries I've made that way.

Just last week I got two different OM rebates (for Kingston ValueRam), about 6-7 weeks tops to receive them. The rebate forms came in an OM coupon booklet, and the address for submitting the rebates had OM in its name (went to Young America, MN). The recent FUJI CD-R's also were OM rebates, to same address, just different PO Box #. Whatever, as long as it goes to Young America, MN, I know I'll get a rebate in a reasonably quick time. If this CD drive's rebate goes elsewhere, then I'd avoid ...

Here's a tip that may save you waiting in line at Circuit City, or even missing out if you do because someone got to the item you wanted first. Circuit City will take an order at their website to be picked up at a B&M store. It must show as in stock in the store for the order to be processed, but you can go on line on Sunday morning before the store opens, place your order for pickup at the store and then go in at your liesure to get the goods. They do this for all of their rebate items and it works beautifully. I have done it several times with no difficulty. The store must pull and hold the item for you, even if it is a rebate item on which they have only a few. I have picked up "For free after rebate items" this way and had other customers say to me -- Where did you find that, I thought they were all out of those?

OMax had the same 50x cdrom drive on sale for $29.99 a month ago. Compusa had the same drive on sale for a higher price but with a $30 rebate. I did the price match and sent the rebate...50x cdrom for free.:D

BTW, the drive is Afreey as others have said...it's working pretty good. Got no complain for something that is free.

Here's the old thread for the free 50x cdrom.:D

Picked mine up today but unforunately I did not work. My computer would not recognize it at all. Tried everything I could think of but no luck. Maybe just got a bad drive. I will try to return it tomorrow. I hope this wasn't a fire sale for a bunch of lemons.

I'm going from my awesome Plextor40x to this cdrom drive...granted free, but it doesnt quite meet my plextor's ability :( so sad to see it go out of my system...(its for sale BTW...)

its a bit loud, but not as loud as the memorex. it at least copies and recognizes everything (which the memorex would not always do) - only once did it stop spinnig half way through a disc, but i just cancelled and started it up again. definitely not the fastest drive around - takes forever to copy a full 700mb, and its about half as fast in terms of copying, as the 12x\32x lite-on burner i bought.

however, in the end - free is free!

Well I bought one...free MIGHT not be worth it. Like all things there must be some variance, but mine sounds like it's going to blow!!! I thought the Memorex was loud I bought. If I get the rebate all if OK, if not...I'm screwed since this is only worth having JUST to have something in a PC when it's this loud. We'll see how it does over time.

just for QC's sake, the one i just bought is really quiet... i changed out the memorex 48x, friggin apache helicopter taking off, to the prime peripheral last night, paying close attn. to the sound and this is waaaaay quieter. think its the disc you're playing? just don't want your drives dying on ya in a month.
