TiVo is one of the best things I own. I've been using it for the last year and it's worth the monthly (or in this case, yearly) fee. I don't even remember when the shows I like are on anymore, I don't pay attention to when new episodes are airing, I just set it and forget it until I want to sit down and watch TV and I find I have new shows to watch. Plus, the 30-second commericial skip feature you can program (it's not turned on by default) into your remote makes all the difference in your sanity when watching shows. Five or six clicks and you're back to your show without dealing with ads. My Mom keeps asking me "Have you seen that ad where..." and I'm happy to answer "No."

I've played around with the TiVotoGo feature where you can transfer shows to your computer and watch them there, but I haven't yet tried burning them to a DVD and watching them on a player. My Dad has done this successfully, however. Transfer rates over an ethernet network are about 1-1 for minutes, i.e., a 60-minute program takes about 60 minutes to transfer to your PC, but you can queue them up. Wireless takes probably around the same.

Erm, I know that posting *links to* referral sites is forbidden here, but if anyone goes in on this deal, I'd be much appreciated if you used my email address as your referral if you don't have someone else already lined up. The TiVo Rewards program is pretty generous with the number of referrals you need to get some good merchandise like a new TiVo unit, an iPod, or a bunch of other nice things. Plus, if anyone has some questions for a TiVo user over the last year that you'd feel you'd need to justify using me as a referral, feel free to email me your questions--I don't normally check my forum messages.

EDIT: I might also add, I'm using a factory refurbished 80-hour unit, and I've had zero problems with my box. My Dad's got a factory-refurbished 40-hour unit, and he hasn't had any troubles, either.

Damn nice deal! I LOVE my Series-1 160GB unit. As does my parents, 3 friends, in-laws, brother-in-law, sister-in-law......

BTW, if anyone wants to help me get a new remote (through TiVo Rewards)... please use my email address when activating - JWeavis @ hotmail.com (I need a new remote)

Thanks in advance

how does the tivo service work? does it work in conjunction with your existing satellite or cable tv service?

or would i need to sign up for one of those? i already have cable, and a dvr from my cable company, but i've always wanted a real tivo.

any thoughts? :) thanks for the awesome heads up!

oh nevermind, i just found it on the tivo website. time to get it i guess!

TiVo works with:
Cable box (digital or analog)
Satellite receiver
Cable (with or without a converter box)
Rooftop antenna
Old-fashioned "rabbit ears"

TiVo is also compatible with virtually any:
VCR
DVD Players
Most TVs

Tivo works fine with your existing cable service. If you have digital cable, you use an "IR Blaster" to change channels on the cable box.

The Tivo box should last three years easily. They're much better quality now (the first generation Phillips boxes were pretty horrible).

Sounds like a hot deal, now need to convince parents to get it.

Does anyone know what format they record in or what you get if you transfer to the comp. Is it possible to reencode it in DivX/XviD?

It is .tivo file with DRM. Reencoding is pretty easy. I do it with Nero Vision Express, usually export to AVI. The encoding process takes a lot of time though.

You need to get a USB adapter (wired or wireless, see TiVo website for suggested models) to use broadband. Regular daily updates are no problem with broadband. Doing the "first call" is a little tricky with broadband. You have to use a dialing prefix to force it to use the ethernet. Google it for instructions.

Yes, you can put in larger hard drives. 9thtee.com is a good place for instructions. There's another site but I forget what it is at the moment. Information also available at tivocommunity.com.

OK. I'm new to the Tivo thing and don't understand the T&C...

I've highlighted places that have me confused. Insight would be appreciated...

* Service fee is required for full functionality.

What is Tivo Service vs. Tivo Plus? Which do I get for lifetime at $299?

What is this about 60 days? Thought this was a 1-year (or lifetime) deal?

What is the service fee? Is that the 1-year or lifetime fee, or something additional?
