FREE 22" CRT

I was at work installing some new servers an an office building and giving them new LCD monitors. Finally one employee takes his old monitor in to the garbage out back. I couldn't just leave it there, so I scooped it. I am now the proud new owner of one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/NEC-MultiSync-FP1350-Totally-Monitor/dp/B00004Y69X

it only has 20" viewable, but its still huge. I love it 🙂

now, for anybody who has used a big CRT like this I need some advice. This one doesn't have a built in VGA cable, so I had to use a cheap POS I had laying around. There is alot of noise on my screen, I can see ghosts of text and lines tend to repeat themselves. Do you think this is because of the monitor or because of the ****** cable?

it only has VGA input, and BNC but I doubt i'll find a graphics card with BNC out.

would the VGA to BNC really be that much better? I mean, the quality can only be as good as the weakest link but if there will be a noticable difference i'll definately spend the extra few bucks.

hmm. I think there must be some kind of software to control the adjustments, there is a USB port on the back. I'll have to look into this.

I haven't used one myself, but from what I understand you might get a slight improvement.

Check in the monitors OSD to see if there are any convergence settings. Someone I know had a 19" Dell that was a bit off like that and all that needed to be done was get the thing set right.

Bad cabling/connectors and KVMs are the primary cause of the repeated lines you describe.

Unless the color is off on the double images, in which case the convergence needs adjustment. Convergence issues are common on older 21" screens, but as you say that thing has a USB connector, it can't really be that old. There should be adjustment controls for convergence both through the USB drivers if you can find them and through the OSD.

BNC is highly overrated. It is more likely to increase convergence issues because of the red green & blue cables not being exactly the same length than it is to make anything clearer, especially if you get a cheap BNC cable. I've never heard of a graphics card with BNC out, but you can get a cable that is VGA on one end and BNC on the other. That's what I have at home, and I use it to connect one PC to the monitors VGA port and ther other PC to the BNC, so that I don't need to use a KVM. Primary PC is connected to VGA.

It is possible that maybe the previous owner was using the BNC connectors and had convergence adjusted for a bad BNC cable so you need to adjust it back now to get rid of the double images.

i used to have the 19" version of that monitor...it is a very good monitor...but the urge of having a 19" flat widescreen made me get rid of it..

okay, I messed around with convergence and I think that this isn't the source of my problem. An interesting thing did happen though, our school just got some new LCDs and one of the monitors had a very similar problem. I think it must be my cable then. Can somnone recomend a good male to male VGA cable? Doesn't need to be long, just a few feet.

but i'll try and describe the lines a bit better. on the right side of jscarrozzos bird avatar there are some faint pale lines that seem to be like the outline of the avater. Almost like moir kind of effect, but like a shadow. I'll try and draw what I see in paint or something.

monoprice was already mentioned. Their cables rock and are dirt cheap compared to monster. I swear my "Premium" component cables are as nice or nicer than monster cables, and the monoprice ones cost me 13 bucks for a 6 foot one, vs like 40+ from monster for the same.

def try another cable. i was using a generic monitor cable that was missing one pin, the same pin, on both ends.. i though nothing of it.

I was getting ghosting in text and bad image quality, but it was a rarely used PC so i never looked into it, i just thought the mnoitor was shoddy. When i got my new(new to me anyway) compaq monitors (p900 p910) i used the same cable and had the same bad image quality. When i switched out the cable to a better quality cable(not missing the single pin) the monitor stop showing any signs of distortion.

Shipping weight: 96lbs. 😛

Now there's a workout! 😀 If you've got the room (and the muscle) it'd be nice to look at (once it's working 100%)

But it's OLD! BNC? Whoo..... you just don't see that anymore! It just might have outlived itself.... if you can afford a couple hundred bucks, you might be able to just BUY one new (or mostly-new.)

I had an old Dell/Sony Trinitron 22" CRT on my desk for the longest time. It always had a crappy picture though. A nicely shielded new VGA cable made all the difference though.
