 I dunno - the last time I signed up for some free subscriptions at work (seemingly credible IT industry mags) I started getting tons of spam - not just email, but phone calls and even catalogs and other junk through the mail. Offers for credit cards and auto and school loans, online universities, and tons of other crap that I had absolutely no interest in and would never have asked for but each one said I had requested info from them. Maybe it was just coincidence and some a-hole got my info by some other means and sold it to everyone they could think of, but it did seem to start right after I signed up for the mags.
I don't even understand what the motivation for signing me up for all that crap was - the people contacting me certainly didn't profit from it. It got to the point where I could tell it was a call center and hang up before they got the first word out, and I had to stop saying my name as part of my greeting so if it was a telemarketer I could say "He doesn't work here anymore."
Does anyone think they might be using this as a gimmick to collect and sell personal data, or have anything insightful to say as to what would motivate someone to do what they did to me? There's probably a better place to ask the second part of that question - I just don't know what it is...
