Freaky video problems on new machine...

Entity

Lifer
My dad's computer system is having some strange problems that I can't begin to identify. I built it, and from my recollection, it worked just fine while I had it - then again, some of the problems he is having aren't things that I would have to go through.

System specs for better analysis:
Asus CUSL2 Mobo
C800@1.12ghz (100@133)
512MB PC133 RAM
TNT2 Video Card

The biggest, most glaring problem is one that I can't figure out at all is related to the video. When he turns the computer on with the monitor off, then turns the monitor on afterward, he won't get any video for as long as 15 minutes. However, when the monitor is on before he boots up, there are no problems.

Any ideas?

The first thing that I would recommend is to set everything to original specs. Overclocking can cause all kinds of weird stability problems and may be at the root of his problem.

Hmmmm...

Interesting one that, I would suspect the monitor or video card though.

It sounds like either the monitor is taking a helluva long time to realize that there's a signal coming from the video card,

orrrrr

With my old system, if you powered up with no monitor plugged in, the system would give post error beeps, and continue.
However, when you plugged the monitor in, 320x240 (like dos) would be black and white only.
Windows came up in colour, but any dos based apps would be black and white (if tehy retained DOS resolution).

It sounds like a similar thing - on power-up, the video card is supposed to signal the monitor to come out of suspend.
It may only be doing this right on the initial power-up... and not doing it again until the resolution changes - ie: when you get into windows.

Is it coming back around the time that windows finishes loading? or does the computer just tick away in the background until the monitor feels like turning on?

If it's the latter, I'd say that the monitor is at fault. Either way, jsut use a looper lead to power the monitor from the computer's power supply.
That way, the monitor switch can be left on, and it will only get power when you turn on the computer - they will be in synch and your problem should disappear...

😉

If you have a spare video card just change it out and see if it does the same thing.
That TNT2 belongs in the trash anyways. 😉

He swapped the video for the on-board video, and the issue is still there. He has also tried two different monitors. Ideas??
