If your real bored, have fun with this one:

1. Key into the calculator the first 3 digits of your phone number
(not area code).
2. Multiply by 80
3. Add 1
4. Multiply by 250
5. Add last 4 digits of your phone number
6. Add last 4 digits of your phone number again
7. Subtract 250
8. Lastly, divide by 2 Is this your phone number???

Any one wanna try to explain it? I know it basically works with any 7 digit number.

Well, this isn't like magical or anything. The formula requires you to enter your whole phone number in parts, so it knows what your phone number is to begin with.

A simple formula is all that is.

I'll explain it.... for the math impaired...
Lets call the first three digits of the phone number X
The first 3 steps ask you to 250(80X+1) = 20000X + 250. Now, since X is the first 3 places of the phone number, multiplying it by 20000 is the same as multiplying it by 10000 (which puts 4 zeros on the end) and multiplying it by 2. So, you've got twice the first 3 digits, followed by 4 zeros, to which you add 250 (which you remove in step 7). Now, you add the last 4 digits twice... then divide everything by 2? (including the first 3 digits that are also multiplied by 2 at this point) If you can't figure it out at this point... Wait til you finish 9th grade.

If you'll pay me $1 apiece for them, via paypal, I'll come up with 100 similar types of problems this weekend that you can play with to your hearts content... all it takes is a little proficiency with 9th grade algebra.

geeez, here's one I just made up.

1. take the first 2 digits of the year you were born.
2. Add 6
3. Multiply by 50
4. add 17
5. multiply by 4
6. subtract the last 2 digits.
7. Subtract the last 2 digits again.
8. divide by 2
9. add the last 2 digits.
10. add the last 2 digits again
11. subtract 634

Wow, magic.

(x = first 2 digits, y = 2nd 2 digits)
(4 (50(x+6) +17) -y -y)/2 +y +y -634 = 100x + y

That one's free, kermalou :)

Let's break this down (we'll use the number 123-4321 to test):

step 3 and 4: add one, then multiply by 250. Essentiall, you're adding 250 to the final number. This is counteracted by step 7, hen you subtract this extra 250.

take the first 3 digits of your phone number, multiply by 80, then 250. 80 x 250 = 20,000.

So, you've multiplied the first 3 digits by 20,000. Note that 123 * 20,000 = 246-0000 (the dash is not a minus, it's there to show you that all you've done is double the number and shift it over to the left, so you have a phone number format)
Note that at the end, when you divide by 2, this goes back to 123-0000

Add the last 4 digits. Ok, so you've added the last 4 digits to your number 246-0000 you now have: 246-4321. Add the same thing again. you now have 246- followed by 2 times the last 4 digits, like this: 246-8642

Note the whole "divide by two" thing again. you add the last four digits twice, then divide by two, effectively adding the last 4 digits only once. when you add any 4 numbers to 0000 (the second half of 246-0000) you're alswys gonig to get the same numbers.

essentially, you're multiplyingx the left three numbers by 10,000, then adding the right four numbers.
