The solution to the problem is not use the built in flash.
When the flash is on axis with the lens, some light comes back as a glow. This is no different than seeing animals' eyes glowing from a flashlight afar.
Matter of fact, if you have a decent pinpoint light source, you can boresight it (look down it like a gun) and point at someone's eyes. You will see the pink/red glow! It's creepy!
