Freaking out here: Athlon XP, KT266A, & PC2100 = 266FSB or not?

Those guys on "The Screensavers" have got me freaking out. They just got done telling some kid he can't get 266mhz FSB using PC2100 DDR. Is this correct? I am attempting my first homebuilt computer and the parts are on the way (newegg). I pretty much based my order on arstechnica's current "Hot Rod" recommendation, i.e. Athlon XP 1700+, Epox 8KHA+, and 512mb of PC2100 DDR.

Someone please reassure me (and advise me), or else just tell me I'm straight up screwed.

the FSB on the athlons is 133. its called 266 because of the DDR reads twice 2x133=266.
And i run teh 1700+ on teh 8KHA+ with 512 and trust me it it a powerhouse

You're screwed 😉

Seriously, Athlon XPs only operate on 266MHz FSB....you could operate it on lower, but why? The kid probably has the jumper on the Epox board wrong (i.e. on 100 MHz instead of 133 MHz).

You're fine....don't worry 😉

Whew. Thanks. Actually, what they told the kid (it was Patrick saying this, if you watch the show) is that PC2100 only runs at 100mhz, and can't do 133, so the conflict between the CPU and memory was preventing him from even POSTing. They told him he needed memory capable of 133mhz and he should go out and buy some PC133. (?!?)

Those guys are prolly on crack.

the people on that show sound like my manager at the computer store i work at: they know just enough about computers to give bad advice and screw stuff up, but not enough to do anything worthwhile.

Hear hear!!

I watch The Screensavers all the time. They do say some goofy stuff sometimes, but occasionally they'll screw up and drop some good information. 😛 Besides, Morgan makes the show worth watching! 😀
