I haven't been keeping up with the threads, but I tripped across bphantom's comment about the 464d client being wayyyyy better in Linux, soooo.....

I cruised over to the D.net pre-release ftp directory and picked up the 464g Win32 client to check it out.... As the 'changes.txt' file states, there are SIGNIFICANT improvements in OGR speed....

I benchmarked it before and after on my 784MHz dual, and it increased my OGR output by about a M/node PER processor!!! So needless to say, I updated all my machines with the new client.

It's like getting a "free" machine considering I have currently four machines (5 processors) going (I'm giving one of my machines to my son for Christmas, so it'll be down until I get the whole-house CAT-5E wiring, patch panel and hub installed).

Sooo, though it's only a "pre-release" client, I highly recommend updating to the latest 464 client.... Here are the .zip file links for some of the clients as of today:

Win32 Client 464g (Zip File, I don't like the installer)

Linux (ELF) (GZIP of tarball file)

Later....

Well, it must be an Intel optimization (what else is new 😛 ) because its slightly slower on my Athlon than the dnetc v2.8010-463-CTR-00071213 for Win32 (Windows 4.10) client.

been there, done that 🙂

thanks for the reminder though as im sure some of the new people will need this info 🙂

Yup, that 464g Windows client showed a significant improvement on Intel CPUs, but lost some performance on the AMD K6 and K7 (Athlon, T-bird, Duron) CPUs.

The Linux client 464d has the Intel improvements as well (in fact HUGE over the disapointing Linux 463 release client) but I have not heard anything definitive on AMDs. Can someone comment on the Linux 464d on AMD Linux machines?

Thanks cautery! The team is now getting an extra Mnode/sec from my 400 Celeron 😀 Every drop counts! 😀

Thanks for the heads up on the new client. My Celery 807 (Win2k) went from an average of 5.65 on the long OGR benchmark client 463x to 6.39 average with that new client. My PIII 600 laptop (Win98SE) went from 4.08 with client 463x to 4.70 average OGR long benchmark. I got an extra 1.36 Mnode/sec just by changing the client!

If you don't update your Windows clients to 464g, at least remember the client because of it's AOL support.😀 With the new WinSock interface, we can finally pick up all of those AOLer's overpowered machines.😀

A bump to remind people to update their clients if they're crunching OGR on Intel procs.... Made a noticible different in my stats. 🙂

AMD processors improved some but not a lot under linux with 464g. Athlon 700 went from 5.0M to 5.5M. On the intel side a Dual Celery 550 went from 7.8M to 8.7M. Plus it has the snazzy efficiency meter, so you can see if something is chewing up clock cycles when your computer should be idle...

Hey Thanx SyZ. That's still a 10% move in the right direction with the Athlon/Linux/464d.

Hopefully the next beta win32 version will have the same kind of improvements for the AMDs.
