Hi all,
I just finished building my very first system last week (see rig in sig) and its mostly been going well so far. The cpu idles below 30 and levels off in the mid 40s during prime95ing.
But the other night the system speaker started beeping like crazy and when I ran over Asus probe was reporting a cpu temp of 88!!:Q I shut down right away but I had time to see that motherboard monitor was also reporting the same thing. After 5 minutes I started it back up and watched temps in the bios for a bit. They were at about 38 and when I booted into windows they dropped to 30 like normal.

Has anyone seen this happen to an asus board and p4 before? Any idea what caused it?

Tonight I will prime some more but I will stay right in front of the box the whole time to see if I can figure out more.

This is:
asus p4p800dx
p4 2.8c @ 2.8
intel stock hsf
as5

tia for any help

Software glitch maybe? The P4 starts to clock throttle around 72c according to the X-bit review and if your temp reports are anywhere near accurate then it should have kicked in by that temp, the only other thing that comes to mind is that the CPU fan stopped spinning.

Pun, (can I call you Pun? :p) do you have a link to that review? What motherboard indicated 72C? I can't find anything specific on their site. My 2.6C tops out @ 70C when I run it @ 3.0Ghz on my IS7, but I hear Abit reads hot.

Thanks Pun, the fan dying had occured to me too. I will run it with the case open tonight and watch. I touched the heat sink as soon as I turned the machine off and it was warm but not hot. I couldn't really say what it should have been though, because I don't have much experience with these things.

I thought that it would throttle itself long before 88 too. I suppose I could let it run and see if the reports are bogus but that wouldn't really be worth the risk.

Check that your heatsink is still attached correctly. A friend had a similar problem, running hot and slow, told him to check it and sure enough one of the clamps was disengaged.

After reading linked article I examined my mobo manual again and found the throttle options (disabled by default

). Asus doesn't document very well but I'm hoping to maybe find a little more on their website and I will also see if intel has any official documentation posted. Thanks

Checked and everything still seems to be in working order. Fan is spinning at regular speed and I've been priming at 44 degrees for well over an hour now. Last night it was kind of sudden too, like it was running steady for a long time, I left the room and a few minutes later it was sky high. Makes me think that the fan died, who knows.

Mother board monitor is has caused issues with me before so I no longer use it. If you are using the monitoring software that came with the MB then that could be your problem as well. If it has it's limits set too low it will cause the beeps. The same thing happens on the Abit boards with their software it the temps are set wrong.

The Abit boards read HIGH not low.

If you don't recommend motherboard monitor or software that came with the board is there anything else you suggest?

I never said I didn't recommend the software that comes with the board. What I meant the point to be is that you need to make sure the temp ranges are sufficient or it will cause problems.

My P4 2.8C runs @ 80+C full-throttle on my Abit-IC7 Max3.

I have finally tracked down the cause of this, however ( i hope!).
It appears that i applied AS Ceramique as one would apply AS 3 or AS 5 (DOH!!)

Also,

I have the Max3 and the system temp hovers around 20C while the PWM temp hovers around 20-30C also.
As was stated in that other thread i believe the PWM on Abit boards are the mosfets and capacitators at the top back
end of the motherboard. The IC7-Max3 has a cooling housing in that area and it stays cool.

Best of luck!

 I don't quite get this. The instructions are the same for both compounds. Do you mean you applied it as you would for an AMD?
