My friend's Toshiba notebook has a broken audio output jack.
He brought over to the Toshiba authorized repair company to inspect.
The company said its the owner's fault and will cost $500+ to replace the motherboard.
My friend obviously said no and wanted the notebook back,
but right now those bastards want a $60 diagnostic fee and not giving him the notebook back.
I am planning to go down there and cause a scene this weekend.
Just to make sure, it's illegal for them to do this right?

He should have been informed about it and signed a contract detailing what would be done.

i have 2 different friends that own PC repair stores and both of them charge initial diagnostic/bench fees. of course they usually get this money when the machine is dropped off.

if your friend signed a form to that effect than, yes, it is legal.

wtf, do you expect them to do this stuff for free?

The notebook is still in warranty.
Those guys just claim is the user's fault and said the warranty doesn't cover.
THey never said anything about a base fee.

Daaamn... 500 to fix the motherboard? Get real.

Cause a scene, but make sure that he didn't sign a contract first.

Your friend has to have SOME sort of contract. He'd just willingly drop off a notebook anywhere?
