frauduluent charge on my AMEX from about 9 months ago

I never noticed it until now and found it after analyzing my previous statements when making a payment today

It's from June 2008. I went through a travel agency to purchase an airline ticket for my mom and I gave them my card information because I was not there in person (my mom was there in person). I noticed that there is a charge from the same date for someone's name I've never even heard of, dated to depart TWO days after it was purchased (Date of purchase 6/10, date of departure 6/12)

I would never purchase a ticket like that and I'm having a hard time convincing AMEX that this charge should be removed. They opened a fraudulent charge on my account and the fraud team is investigating. Will I be able to get this charge removed?

The travel agency is one of those small hole in the wall type places in L.A. geared towards Asian Americans. I don't even know the name of the place or where it's located because I gave my card information over the phone. I'm pissed off that $1000+ airline ticket was charged on my account for someone's damn pleasure.

edit: I'm willing to bet that it was the employee who hated her job and wanted a one way ticket to Asia two days later. I swear I think that is probably who made the charge. She couldn't afford the ticket and who gives a shit about fraudulent charge with someone's credit card? She's leaving the country anyway!

if you didn't notice a $1,000+ charge when you paid that months bill you have too much money anyway

it's because I owed quite a bit on my credit cards and I lost track. I also did balance transfers between cards and took the amount as it was without scrutinizing the detail. I know it seems crazy that I would miss a $1000 charge but when your credit card debt reaches a certain point, it's not as noticeable

I didn't make payments in full, only small amounts/minimum payments so it went unnoticed.

If you are far enough in debt to not notice $1000

step 1: cut up credit cards
step 2: pay off credit cards
step 3: profit

step 4: MAYBE get new credit cards after they are paid off

I have aggressively paid it down and have zero balances on 2 of 3 cards

Can we stay on topic? thanks

Honestly this is your own fault. Whether or not you carry a balance you should review the charges every single month. It takes about 10 - 15 minutes tops and there's no excuse not to do it. I doubt AMEX will do anything because legally they're not required to. Anyways, after this amount of time the chances of actually catching the person are much smaller.

I don't think it was off topic. If your debt was lower you wouldn't have missed ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS and therefore would have prevented the entire issue.

I really do hope they remove the charge for you. No one should ever pay for something they they did not order.

my parents had some Brazilian company global.com? charging their credit cards every month for 1 year and 1/2... dunno why they didn't catch it... but i got all of it taken off.... you have to write a couple letters.

I don't know of any cc company that will let you dispute a charge after 90 days has passed. What did AMEX say?

I highly doubt Amex or any CC company will let you dispute the charge after 9 months. Sorry to say but YOU'RE SOL!

Most credit card company have 90 days rule, it's likely that you're sol

Don't think it is a CC rule but law. Part of an agreemnet they came up with the Fed gov to allow them to do other things, like charge a intrest rate that would make a mob boss blush.

But yea if this was $100 or so then a CC might eat it to keep a good customer. But $1000!!!

this

or

that

I also have no idea why you asked here without at least calling AMEX. You absolutely fail at credit cards and this thread is a proof of that, I'm afraid.

I have no idea how you can get this far into a thread without reading the OP, where he clearly states that he has called AMEX.
