went to sprint to sign up for service and they said that someone else in a diff. state has my social. is here a good place to start and/or where should i be lookin at

First off, pull your credit report and see what damage they've been doing.

You need to contact the credit agencies and have them put a fraud alert on your report. That will make it so they must contact you personally before a new line of credit will be issued.

If there's no accounts on there that you didn't open, then you were lucky to notice it soon before it could get really bad. Putting the fraud alert on your account should help things considerably, remember to do it with all three agencies.

Sort of off topic, but I wonder what happens if an identity theif trys to open an account after the hold as been put on the account. Seems like it'd be pretty easy for the people sitting there running the paperwork to call the police and have the thief arrested right there.
