AUSTIN, Texas-Lambda Phi Epsilon's status as a registered student
organization at The University of Texas at Austin has been canceled
until Dec. 19, 2011 because of hazing, Teresa Graham Brett, associate
vice president for student affairs and dean of students, announced today
(Dec. 20).

"The cancellation of a group's registration is the most severe penalty
that can be levied against a registered organization," Brett said.

Terrible that it takes a student's death to reach this point. I've been following this one closely because the student who passed away was a resident of my brother (he is an RA).

The action of a few doesn't represent all. I'm not saying that I will defend fraternaties, but there definitely are some good ones out there.

I never could figure out why colleges have any official involvement with frats/sororities at all. If groups of students want to share a house and get stupid why should a university care? By giving official recognition to these groups the colleges are just opening themselves up to criticism and possibly liability everytime some dork gets stupid enough to die.

I have been subjected to lots and lots of Frats and their members.....the majority are sheeplike idiots with no clue how to act on their own.....thus why they are in Frats. I did have some good friends that were in Frats but they were the non-typical Frat member.

'Cause frats network and successful alumni tend to donate?

...just a guess.

I hate frats though. I haven't seen anything good come out of them in a long time.

Universities, for the most part, are active and sanction the fraternities in order to impose a modicum of control. If there was no direct university involvement in the Greek system, then every fraternity would be Animal House. This way, they can have penalties for those houses that don't make grades, that have alcohol violations and the like. Does this mean that every fraternity is clean and follow the rules? No. Does it mean that no one gets away with stuff? Of course not. It just means that there is some semblance of order.
Now, I am not going to defend every fraternity, but neither will I allow all of them to be lambasted. My college (WSU) is known to be the alcohol capital of Washington state. Some of the fraternities act like it, while others don't. Don't pre-judge every fraternity just 'cuz a few screw it up.

Meh, most of us gave up on calling people sheep in high school. But seriously, what does that even have to do with anything? Most of the guys I knew were idiots too, but got along with plenty.

Getting along with people has nothing to do with them being idiots. I can be in a room full of complete fools yet still get along with them. The idiot factor in Frats and their collective thinking is what leads to hazing deaths, which is relevant to the discussion here. I have seen this behavior in Frats many times. I had good friends that were in different Frats and thus I always had a choice to go to the best parties around, in fact one of the Frats treated me like a member. What I witnessed spending time around those Frats was entertaining and disturbing at the same time but you go to parties to find women to have fun with so dealing with the idiot Frat guys was acceptable when in the right mood.

Haven't heard of any charges as of yet. The whole issue is still really getting to my brother so he went home for a few days to kind of step back from it all.

I am in a Fraternity and these kinds of Hazing our Fraternity is against and we do abide by the laws. We do not haze others, granted there are some stupid Fraternity who thinks that hazing is funny or/and fun. Please consider this before bashing the term Fraternity as whole, 5% of the students at RIT are in greeks and those 5% does approixmately 90% of the community service for RIT.

I pray for the viticm's families.

Who keeps the stats on community service preformed by students who choose not to belong to frats?
