I am in a fraternity, and I feel that many people have a misconception of us. We are not all like the outrageous partiers of Animal House, nor do we not have morals. Yes we drink, yes we have fun. Personally, pledging for a fraternity had nothing to do with being "accepted". I did it for myself, to see what I am really made of. A person never knows what they truly can do, until they are pushed to their highest potential. As an asian brother of my mostly white fraternity, I have been accepted like anyone else, and yet I still see people stereotyping us. Believe me, we do more community serivce than most of the folks that attend college, we also as a collective have a 3.1 out of 4.0 GPA. That is very good for 58 guys in the New York State School system. These Greek letters I wear on my chest mean more than anyone can know. Just my 2 cents.

curious, in what sense did you have to 'push yourself'? what high potential and self-composure did you discover?

Just to expand on what I said above (hate editing after someone else has replied to the thread)...

That obnoxious mentality also applies to most in that age group...teen through young adult, preserved longer for those who go to college since a similar environment is preserved longer. Think HS Football, Basketball team, Chess Club, whatever. Becoming part of a group often leads to making sure others feel left out for some reason. Difference being those examples and what else I can think of have a specific reason for forming the group (need players for a team, need a team to play the game) Not having been in the greek system I never saw the 'point', the reason for forming the group other than for group identity. So that's what I was meaning to ask.
