just installed fraps to record myself playing cs:s.
read through the entire manual and faq online.
screenshots are fine, but videos are VERY laggy to a point where i can't even watch them

CS:Source installed on 150gb Raptor (C)
FRAPS program installed on 150gb Raptor (C)
Movies and screenshots saved to 160gb Seagate 7200.7 (D)

system exactly as in signature, what can i do to get my movies smooth? thanks

*I Think* when recording Fraps controls the FPS output. So, in Fraps try changing the default FPS to 50 or 60. That should help.

Also, in task manager set your game affinity to 0 and Fraps to 1.

Now if this helps you'll soon be looking for a larger storage drive. Fraps movies are HUGE! :D

Recording anything above 1024x768 is suicide.

Also, remember to get the latest version of FRAPS available. I remember one of the old ones had some serious FPS problems with ATI cards.

In my fraps, my FPS was set at 60 by default. I set mine to 100, then after I recorded, the video ran at 100 fps. not sure if it was suppose to or not, but it did

so if i wanted to play cs and record myself playing it, i should play at a lower resolution and turn off sound and record at 30fps? is 30fps smooth enough to enjoy watching again? and if i wanted sound, should i tick the box "select best sound input" or "use windows input"

lets say i'm in the middle of playing cs:source and i have fraps open in Windows, and i press "f9", it should start recording to my save movies folder, but how long does it record for? and am i supposed to press it again to stop?

i currently have my fraps settings as "f9" video capture hotkey, "full-size", "29.97fps", "record sound", "detect best sound input"
FRAPS version 2.7.4 build 5869, is there a newer one i should use?

thanks guys i seemed to have solved my problem i believe the solution to the problem was to lower the fps to 30 to get viewable video files (but that limited my gaming fps to 30), raising it to 40 got noticible choppyness in the video, same with 50 and 60.

30 is good enough. If you can spare the size, you can make it a little higher.

do u mean video file size? or are you talking about something relating to resolution?

You should keep the rez like @ 640x480 but you can add more fps for the video. Instead of 30, 45 for example.

I think the reason for the choppyness is simply because your computer is choking on all the data, even though your computer is beastly.. i mean the files must be gigantic. the limit is prolly gunna be 10x7 @ 30fps. but who would want to bother downloading a 10x7 video? files too big. what you can do, though, is compress the video with divx or the like and it will be much easier for your computer to handle, so the video would play smoothly. i would stick with 640x480 and pick Normal size in fraps for videos. yes that means you play the game at 640x480. or you can pick 1280x960 and pick half size in fraps, but then you arent guaranteed a constant 30fps. er who am i kidding you have an x1900xt.

30fps is the good for videos. it won't seem choppy when you play it back. it only seems choppy when you're gaming at 30fps probably because that has something to do with you being in control of the screen and expecting it to be smooth. its fine for watching, though.

you can leave it on "select best sound input". it will probably automatically use "Stereo Mixer" or "What U Hear" or something similar. you can tweak the volumes in control panel, let me know if the videos come out sounding too quiet or loud or scratchy and i'll tell u where to look.

the recording limit for the unregistered version is 30 seconds. i think its unlimited with a registered version, or until your hard drive fills up :p.

so the settings i would use would be Full-size, 30fps, record sound, detect best input, and play the game at 640x480. oh and bind the record key to something like F so u can start it and stop is right away instead of reaching for F9. note that your flash light might come on :D. pick whatever u want.

glad to help if u have more questions or if i missed one.

you just use your regular settings for the game, then pick half size in fraps. if you played at 1680x1050, then the resulting video would be 840x525. should be fine.

(maximum full-size recording resolutions are 1152x864 for 4:3 and 1280x800 for 16:10. maximum half size is 2560x1600). the faq has alot of info too :).

and you're welcome
