Fraps: Eating all my FPS

evolvedbullet

I want to make a video but fraps eats all of the FPS up, even when I give it a limit in the movie's section.

I start out with 120 FPS while playing
I get shot down to 1 FPS while trying to record instantaneously

What's the problem here?

Getting 1 FPS has not happened when I've used FRAPS although the FPS rate does drop down significantly while recording (say to around 15 fps). This happens because when you run and record gameplay FRAPS is using your screen data and recording that data to your HDD. A lot of memory is used for that processing causing the frame rates to drop down. To increase FPS while recording with FRAPS try these:

1. Select half-size and set your fps counter to 15 or 20fps.
2. Have detect best sound input enabled.
3. Lower your game's graphics settings.
4. Make sure your using the latest drivers for your graphic card.

Btw, which game are you trying to record and what are your system specs?

I always had major slowdown while frapsing until I upgraded. Even then it was still pretty bad. You need a high end PC to fraps without having any slowdown I think.

I always assume 50% slowdown while running FRAPS. So if you can't get a FPS above 40-50 in the game your video is going to look choppy while playing.

It's mentioned on the FRAPS website that if a movie is being recorded with FRAPS then there well be a "noticable impact on the game". It's due to the process of saving the screen- data to the disk. Personally, when I use Game Cam to record games while playing, the drop in the FPS is much lower.
