Frankencamera - Opensource camera firmware

Open source firmware for cameras. While I'm only learning how to use a DSLR properly, I'm sure there are others like fuzzy who are more experienced and are sometimes thinking "Why doesn't the camera do XYZ?" Well, if this project is successful, we could probably in the future download more feature rich firmwares to our cameras much like how we can download firmware to some DAP's or routers to enable more features.

I read the article as describing the development of an open source camera that would accept 3rd party firmware. Present DSLRs do not accept 3rd party firmware - and that is proper, considering warranties, etc.

Where there's a will there's a way. A lot of devices aren't meant to accept 3rd party firmware but I don't believe anyone has really attempted it yet. Just saying that while it likely won't impact anyone or anything for years to come, it's an interesting development.

Considering the time line that something like this might become viable it's not out of the question to get an older DSLR camera to mod and play with since cameras get better and better every year.

I don't think I'd bother, the only thing in the firmware of my 30D that I'd change would be making that stupid Print button do something useful.
