linkage

The French, along with Russia and China, also permanent members of the UN but not expected to vote, have extensive oil rights in Iraq and want those guaranteed before agreeing to any UN resolution

For the it is all about oil crowd.

You thought they were opposed to invading Iraq for any other reason than money? When did you wake up?

Haha, good find. Its always amusing to watch the same crowd who accuses the US of wanting to take Iraqi oil also cite France and Russia's opposition to various US positions WRT Iraq, suggesting that France and Russia are doing it out of some 'moral' reason. BWAHAHAHA!

Iraq has been buying sympathy since the Gulf War by promising sweet prices on Iraqi crude to anyone who will not go along with the US. Iraq owes Russia about $8 billion from previous military deals and owes France a healthy sum, too, for building Iraq's air-defense and communications infrastructure.

If it is 'about oil' for the US, then it damned well sure is 'about oil' for everyone else, too.

You forget out the chinese who have been selling air defence systems to iraq as well. The chinese sells them, iraq installs them, and the US/UK blows them up, repeat.

Well I forget the precise route that it takes. I thought it was more like China sells to France, France sells to Iraq, and the US/UK blows it up. There may be another middleman or two in there.

Yes, Juliette Binoche, Julie Delpy and Irène Jacob are all past their prime now. We do owe them something for Audrey Tautou, though maybe not the Iraqi oilfields.

;) of course.

Not suprising. The US wants Saddam at any cost. France wants it's oil rights secured. We will trade Iraqi oil for France's approval so we are not seen going it alone. Everyone is happy. Well, France and the US at least.

Hey don't forget the Ruskies. Iraq owes them about $8 billion, I'm sure we can work out a deal that will convince the Russians to give us full support.

Well, that is, unless the Russian's support of Iraq and opposition to a few US positions in the UN Security Council was truly out of some morally superior concern for the Iraqis. <cough> fat chance <cough cough>.

I'm not surprise at all. We knew all along that French had billion dollar interest in Iraqi's oil.

But for those naysayers, the facts don't matter because they are blinded by their disdain for USA.
