Fragmented files won't go away !

I have been placing my page files on D:; my main OS on C: by itself from the outset of loading this PC - about two years back.

Recently I got some malware and through a series of scans the malware is gone (I think, I hope, pretty sure).

Why, I do not know - I changed the page file over to C:, even though there was not enough room. I, of course - changed it back to D: drive, but now there is this image of the page files still there - fragmented - when I do a defrag.

The space alloted does not show up as far as the disc is concerned as I have over 30% headroom.

It is there, none the less - as it shows up as a fragmented section in the final report of Diskeeper.

Any idea how to get rid of this and get the hard drive back to normal?

Thanks in advance.

Actually I did, from within the Recovery Console. No dice.
I used these commands ...
cd \
copy c:\boot.ini pagefile.sys,
del pagefile.sys

I am pretty sure the pagefile is not there on C:\.
It was there - of course, and then once I designated the virtual memory back to D:\, removing it from C:\ - the fragmented section looks to be occupying the same place that the virtual mem was.

Still odd is the fact that when I use a defragger I got from blumetools, it will start out NOT SHOWING the red section, then it will show up while defragging, and while it is working - the red is addressed - looks to be taken out, and then when it is finished - the red is back again. BUT THEN - after finishing and closing the blumetools program ..I can just open it back up to look, and the red is gone. It is like a false read that is seen by the blumetools defragger, and not by Diskeeper at all.

Really weird.

The PC is working good. I just like to have everything spiffy, and I do not want to have to reload XP on the C: partition, as there is a couple of programs that I have lost the password for..

Thanks for the response.

Check out Spacemonger. There's nothing to install, just open it up, pick which drive you want to examine, and it gives you a pretty little picture of that drive. You can delete anything you see fit.

The new version is not free, but I've been using the old version for years and it works just fine on XP. Don't know about Vista.

Here is the website: http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/

Choose "Free Software" and then scroll the bottom of the page to download Version 1.4.0 unless you'd like to try the new version.

Just ignore it, if you have the free space back don't worry about it. You've already wasted more time worrying about this than defragging will ever save you in the long run.

Looks to be promising. I downloaded 1.4.
How do I run it? It asks what to open it with, and I have no idea.
Thanks

I just downloaded it to make sure nothing had changed and it hasn't. Open the zip file and there are 2 files. One is the exe and the other is the readme. Just double click the exe and it opens. From there choose File and then choose "Open" and select which disk to inspect.

From the readme:

"
INSTALLATION
------------

Unpack the .ZIP archive. A single Windows executable will be produced,
named "SpaceMonger.exe", along with "README.TXT", which is what you're
reading now. The "SpaceMonger.exe" file is the complete program, and it
can be moved into any folder you like. (We recommend "C:\Program Files",
but you don't have to put it there.)

Double-click on it to run it."

I will do it again. For some reason I got a bare php file.
Thanks

Looks like I was downloading the wrong download. 😱

I will pull this program out once every few months or so when I notice one of my drives is missing a few gigs. I delete all the temp files and leftover stuff from whatever game I was playing last year.

Just thought I would report back. It is all fixed.
I know it was not a life or death thing, but it does feel good to have a clean hard drive.

The SpaceMonger helped, but actually what did it in the end was the free little defrag program I was using - free.pages.at/blumetools/ - that did the trick. It showed the offending portion that was 'fraged', but also showed where it was on the hard drive actually by name and position. This made me to be able to find the files in SpaceMonger and delete them. Then all that was left was a good defrag, and all was well.

Thanks
