FPS w/ mouse and keyboard or gamepad?

So last night, I have some talk with several friends and they would claim that a controller is better for FPS. Their arguments are that all the buttons are there, and you can aim and shoot faster. Also, it's more "comfortable". Here's the kicker, they said that all the FPS tournament (their example is Halo/2) are done with a gamepad or a console type gamepad. In my gaming experience the keyboard and mouse combo is the best for FPS and nothing can even comes close. Just a rant thread and is interested to see if gamepad player can even hold a candle to the keyboard and mouse player (if both are top tiered experience player).

It's sad, but I really have no way to prove it to them, while they talk down to me. This is with other friends who are afraid to speak up or don't know much about FPS, thus leaving me defenseless. So I was just frustrated and just need to check if my sanities are still there.

You're sane. And of course Halo 2 tournaments are played with a controller-you have to use an adapter to play with a KB/M on an xbox, and that doesn't even work well (the aiming has built in acceleration and the such).

There are plenty of examples of why KB/M is better. Look up Shadowrun. It was made for both 360 and PC, and the 360 version has autoaim, PC version doesn't unless you plug in a 360 controller. They also made the whole aiming reticule expand while moving fast purely for the reason to stop mouse users from getting quick aimed shots in.

Quake 3 PC users wasted quake 3 Dreamcast users.

And nearly every console FPS game has autoaim. PC games don't.

Mouse and Keyboard wins. Big time.

Controller: All the buttons are right there.
Keyboard: All the buttons are right there. Only, there's about 3 times as many within easy reach. And that's if you don't include a gaming grade mouse, which can add quite a few more immediately available buttons.

Controller: Relative motion means you can never aim faster then the absolute fastest the recticle moves at full tilt.
Mouse: How fast can you move? Yeah, that's how fast it can move.

Controller: Accuracy is limited by the inherit resistance in spring loaded analog sticks.
Mouse: At most, there is friction to resist motion, and that's kept to a bear minimum through teflon padding.

I hate console fps games, aiming is too slow and too hard. USE A MOUSE + KEYBOARD

This issue is so old its just gotten annoying everytime it pops up.

Wheres that guy who was gonna have a tournament, 1-on-1 with the console fanboy in CS?

I havent seen an update to that thread for a little while.

Much like the graphics issue, console lovers THRIVE in ignorance. The controller thing is just one more way to be "kewl" and "leet".
Which is fine so long as they are happy. If I stop and think about the main reason we play video games is for enjoyment. If they are being entertained it really doesnt matter that much.

I think someone here should make a video of him/her playing Shadow Run against a guy who's using an XboX 360 pad, post it on YouTube, and have it stickied here.

Why? The 360 user gets auto-aim and the PC doesn't. Not that we necessarily need it, but it certainly adds to the 360 user.

Heh... I always (PAINFULLY) waited for the GTA games to come to PC. Auto-aim? WTF? Shooters have no place on consoles... Just as fighting games have no place on the KB...

IIRC, the PC also gets much worse recoil effects when you whip around doing a 180degree turn very quickly. something to that effect to balance it out - aka shaft pc users.

My little cousins used to talk so much trash when they would kick my ass at Halo on the original xbox, simply because joystick controllers for fps' are garbage.

Granted, I didn't play Halo or have an Xbox but I told them that if I had a kb/mouse I would completely destroy them (I had played fps' since Duke with a keyboard and mouse).

Finally one day they came over with a with an adapter for the joystick when Halo was released on the PC and it was just hilarious how easy they were to kill cause they moved/aimed so slow. I beat them something like 28-3 when I hadn't played Halo for months. It was one of the most gratifying moments I've ever had in any game ever.
