fps problems in hl2, need help!!

I'm trying to get hl2 deathmatch to run using my ancient geforce 3 card. This is only temporary as i wait for a replacement card from evga for a 6800gt that recently died. I have lowered all the options in game and still can not achieve 30+fps. I also tried using the command mat_dxlevel 70 with no change. Checking the video options menu it still says that im running dx8. Are there any tips that could be useful to get this game to run 30+fps and what is the best driver for a geforce 3 card, thanks for the help.

try this (it works for me):

"F:\j\Steam\SteamApps\usrname\half-life 2\hl2.exe" -console -window -dev -dxlevel 70

you are waiting on a replacement 6800gt to be put back with that poor old 1.3? Where you getting 30+ on that rig? I have my doubts. My suggestion is to upgrade that cpu and play something less demanding until you do.
There are stickied posts over on the steam forums on how ot set up to play HL2 and associated mods with low end systems, that might something else to look at.
