I've actually never seen this topic posted before, but I apologize if it has. I've been using this configuration since I started playing FPS games, and it has worked pretty well, but I would just like to know what other people are doing so that I might try it out.

Here's mine w/ MS Intellimouse Optical:

left mouse button: fire
right mouse button: run foward
right side button: jump
scroll wheel: change weapons and alternate fire in UT
D key: strafe left
F key: strafe right
spacebar: run backwards

I'm thinking about changing it so that all movement is controlled on the keyboard and all aiming and firing is done with the mouse. How do you guys have it set up?

second mouse button - weapon config in cs

This is what I prefer (mostly in CS and UT, though some keys are a bit different).

Forward - Arrow key up
Back - arrow key down
Strafe left - arrowkey left
strafe right - arrowkey right

moust buttons for fire and alt. fire
weelbutton to change weapons (or 1,2, 3 etc...)

ctrl - Jump
shift - crouch (cs)
del - buy menu (also cs)
Enter - Reload (cs)

most of the keys are very close to my left hand so I don't have to move halfway across the keyboard to press them. Anyway, I'm used to it so I use that config any FPS game I might play.

sorry, I don't understand how you can use right click as walk forward.....that's just kinda weird. :) I guess I'm just used to WASD, with right click as weapon special function.......

I use an odd setup that works well for me in cs with a regular MS intellimouse.

-Forward: Up arrow (the one in the arrow thing shaped like a tetris piece, not the number pad arrows)
-Backward: Down arrow
-Left and Right: Look sideways with mouse
-Walk: Shift
-Jump: Left arrow
-Duck: Right arrow
-Strafe Left: Ctrl
-Strafe right: Ins (0 on the numpad)
-Shoot: Primary mouse
-Special Function: Right mouse
-Scroll weapons: Wheel

Right-click as forward kicks ass! I have it set up that way and love it. But, you don't think I'll tell you the rest of my set up, so you can copy it and beat me?!?!?! :)

f - back
c - crouch
r - reload

Yeah, I know it's a bit unconventional which is why I wanted to see what other people are doing. I've been playing like that for a year now and I've grown accustomed to it (I even win a good number of online matches in UT :) ) However, I've found that in the heat of battle my fingers get a little confused sometimes with foward being on the mouse and backward being the spacebar. A lot of times I'll end up pushing both which essentially makes me a sitting duck. That's why I'm thinking about changing to the WASD config so that I can't be pushing the foward and backward button at the same time. Plus, I want to change jump to something on the keyboard since the MS Intellimouse Optical is the only mouse I've seen with a right side button, so I'll be really screwed when I get a new mouse.

Hahaha....I'm not the only one! All of us right click = foward people should form a clan and teach those bastards! :) Yeah, that'll make 'em think twice before making fun of us.

steering wheel w/ gear shift and pedals.....

right mouse: walk
left mouse: fire (its only logical since we use that button clicking around windows)
scroll wheel: weapon pick

D: walk backwards
F: strafe left
G: strage right
Z: usually my zoom key
E: Use key
C: Crouch
R: Reload
Space: Jump

this way all the buttons are near my left hand

Mouse1 = Fire
Mouse2 = Jump in Q3 & UT, in CS it's alternate fire
Mouse3 (middle button) = Next weapon in Q3, alternate fire in UT, reload in CS

WASD with:

Q = Rocket launcher in Q3 & UT, in CS it's 'Use' function
E = Shotgun in Q3, Flak cannon in UT, null in CS
Z = Railgun in Q3, Sniper rifle in UT, C4 in CS
C = Crouch in all three
F = Null in Q3 & UT, flashlight in CS
SPACE = /kill in Q3 (to respawn more quickly after falling into the void/fog), feign death in UT, and jump in CS

Weapon script binds for CS:

F4 = MP5
F5 = M4A1 if CT, AK if T
F6 = Aug if CT, Commando if T
F7 = Steyr machine pistol (I forget it's model name) if CT, MAC10 if T
F8 = Auto Shotty
F9 = FB
F10 = HE
F11 = Armor w/helm
F12 = Deagle
Insert = MP5, Armor w/helm, HE
Delete = Armor w/o helm
Home = Diffusor
End = NV
PgUp = Prim ammo
PgDn = Sec ammo
- = P228
= = 5-7

Wow, I use UP/DOWN/LEFT/RIGHT (we're a dying breed now it seems), and your config is so much more logical than mine.

Yes, i think right-click does have an advantage over the WASD setup. splitting up the movement controls over two hands enables you to more precicely navigate certain tasks. you just have to hold down less buttons with your left hand when you, say, have to jump while crouching, strafing, and running forward at the same time.

that mouse button ALWAYS has a finger on it, so you should use it for something that you need ALL THE TIME, not just secondary firing.

ILLKID:

my setup is actually very close to yours:

strafeleft = ,
straferight = .
forward = rightclick
backward = ?
crouch = m
jump = k
reload = ;
lastweapon = L
fire = leftclick
seconday = mouse3 (on the wheel)

and i use enter, J, H, N, alt, and others around there for other game-specific stuff. :)

notice how my 'reverse' is not located below (or inbetween) the left and right on the keyboard, but instead right next to it. there is no real reason why it should be below, and once i switched to this setup, my strafing became more precise.

i dont see how any other setup could have an advantage over this unless you have more mouse buttons. :D

Quake 3:

Left Mouse: Fire
Right Mouse: Forward
Wheel: Zoom/Weapon Scroll
A: Strafe Left
S: Strafe Right
Z: Move Backward
Space: Jump

If I had more buttons on my mouse, I might change some things, but RIGHT MOUSE for forward movement is the most intelligent choice. I've seen many analyses of this, and it seems to make the most sense. The only reason some people knock it is that they're not used to it. I used to use the WASD, but then realized how much more sense Right Mouse: Forward was, and my game dramatically improved once I got used to it. If you have a configuration similar to the above, you almost never need to move your fingers off the keys. The only thing I might change is to make D the 'back movement' key, so that I don't have to move my finger. The reason I use A & S for strafe is that I can utilize my dominant fingers (index and middle) for those important keys.

i use the keypad
8 = forward
7 = strafe left
9 = strafe right
5 = backwards
+ = previous used weapon(for CS)
/ = reload
* = use
- = flashlight
enter = jump
. = crouch
end (in the little block of six keys to the upper left) = walk
backspace = drop weapon
mouse 1 = fire
mouse 2 = secondary function
scroll wheel = scroll weapons

simple...effective

dunno, seemed logical when there weren't a whole slew of buttons necessary to be able to play
still works fine for Counter-Strike
