FPS on console: which finger do you use for trigger?

Possibly a bad habit but I always use index instead of middle. I assume a lot of people do this, too, even though the controllers are really built such that index is for shoulder and middle for trigger.

Something I've recently thought about is the idea of using the left trigger as the firing button instead of right. I notice my thumb fidgets ever so subtly when I pull the trigger with the same hand (affects aim while sniping), but I don't know if games even support such a layout or, if in practice, it would suck.

Is there ever a time to use both at once? I honestly can't recall any. Most people I know use their index finger. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use their middle finger actually...
To me, it's like the people who drive an automatic car with both feet. Scary.

Its actually pretty hard to use your left foot on the brake when you are not used it. I use it on the brake almost 100% of the time when I am operating heavy machinery but never in my car.

I know that on some of the newer vehicles if you press the accelerator and the brake at the same time the PCM will record it and if you take it into the dealer they will know. It can void your warranty(power braking for burnouts).

I've never, ever, heard of them voiding a warranty for it. It's recorded in the "black box" to help deal with Toyota-style unintended acceleration incidents. I started using my left foot after attending a few track days. I like it personally.
 
I find using me'dius for trigger to be very uncomfortable. Secondus manus feels natural in that position but it may just depend on how one got used to holding it early on. I suppose if the triggers and shoulders were lower facing the backside of the controller, it would seem more natural to use the me'dius for trigger.
 
Trigger finger for trigger. It's only natural. There is very rarely a time when you would be required to pretty both shoulder buttons at the same time.
 
I use my middle finger for the triggers, but I developed that after PGR2 came out on Xbox back in the day. I played for so long, I think I killed the nerves in my index finger from holding the right trigger. I switched to the middle finger for triggers and it just felt a lot more natural (most likely due to years of paintball). Stuck with it since.

This is just stupid. You are not a race car driver. You drive an automatic, zero and I mean zero percent of the time will this help you in any way, but it is very dangerous.

When you use both feet, you use both sides of your brain and you lose reaction time. You also run the risk of getting confused and hitting the brake when you want to hit the gas, or vice-versa. I know you want to be fast and furious boy-racer but in this case you're just a danger to everybody else on the road. I don't recommend that anybody try this, but if you do you will quickly see why it's idiotic for anybody to do with an automatic transmission.

You are not Michael Schumacher. Stop endangering everybody else on the road just so you can say "see but I go to track days and I can drive with both feet i'm so cool!".
 
Trigger finger the triggers and then just move them up to hit the bumpers.

While accelerating and braking with two separate feet is really the ONLY way to race, it's just not needed when you're on the highway in traffic. Now, maybe if you want to practice your ability to move them independently for a race, that's different.
 
A properly designed controller will allow you to just roll your index finger from the trigger up to the bumper. Shouldn't need to have one finger on each.
 
Index finger on the mouse button...yes, I use a mouse/kb on consoles as well as PC's...well, except for games like D3 or others that are just so well-tuned for controllers.

Have you ever ridden a motor cycle? Did you ever confuse the front brake, clutch, rear brake, or gear shifter? Because those are on your left hand, right hand, right foot, and left foot respectively. Have you ever slammed on your gas when you meant to push down on the clutch? I didn't think so. See, humans are actually pretty awesome, and we're completely capable of not confusing our left and right foot, even in emergency situations. It's amazing right?

No I just push my 2009 R6 around and make noises with the clutch in.


Dude have you ever even sat on a bike? The front brake on a bike is on you RIGHT hand and the rear brake is on you RIGHT foot. And what are you talking about? The throttle on a motorcycle is operated with your wrist, not squeezing your fingers (brake).


Pretty sure you either don't own a bike or won't be around long enough to respond to this post, but if the former is the case then please take a trip to your local bike shop and familiarize yourself with how stuff works.

Yes, I have had a few bikes (all dirt). Sorry flipped the hands when I was writing the post (and I never mentioned a throttle) but it doesn't really change my point which you clearly missed... The fact that you can operate 5 distinctly different things with 4 different appendages makes it pretty clear that a human being can control something as simple as a throttle and brake with two feet.

In BF3 I had the Jet buttons mapped so that triggers were acceleration/deceleration and one of the bumpers (I forget which one it's been a few months since I've played) was for guns, the other was for flairs IIRC.
 
Index finger, the way it was intended. The bumper (on the xbox controller at least) is most efficiently activated with the second knuckle of the index finger. However, most people I see move their index finger up to activate the bumper with the third knuckle/finger pad.

The triggers/bumpers on the dual shock 3 are so bad, that it makes sense to use two fingers.
