FPS not going up? Vsync is off. Doesn't matter if settings are lowest?

Like Left 4 Dead 2. If I turn all the settings to the lowest & screen resolution. The FPS remains the same? What gives? Sticks around 30FPS. Same with Left 4 Dead 1 too.

Same with like GTA IV a non-steam game. The lowest setting don't do much. However that's a bad console port.

Specs can be found here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3332167&SID=

Video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...ech-_-14102855

Other source games seem to run at 60FPS during heavy action while sometimes dropping to 30fps. While 100 something when nothing is around. Again if all visual settings are set to low & resolution set to the lowest. No change in FPS.

What's the deal?

What is the CPU you are using?

At lower resolutions any game is limited by CPU and not GPU. The reason there is no change in FPS is because that is the max your CPU can deliver at that resolultion.

EDIT: didn't see the link before. Anyway, what the lowest resolution that you are currently playing?
Does Gateway allow you to overclock your CPU? 1.8Ghz seems pretty low for today's games.

Since there is no difference in FPS. I play at 1440X900 which is my monitors highest.

By other games you mean HL1 and HL2? LFD1 and LFD2 are resource intensive when compared to previous source games and, no offense intended but, your video card is not that great either.

GTA IV on PC is riddled with bugs and is one of the crappiest console ports(you will see a lot of games like these in the future). It is extremely dependent on the CPU.

The bottom line is your system is severely bottle necked by your CPU.

You're bottle-necked by your CPU.
Upgrade the CPU and you'll see a noticeable improvement in FPS.

Only problem I foresee with doing that though is you may end up needing to replace the PSU as well because power could become a factor.

IIRC when valve put out L4D they upgraded the source engine slightly which is why you see the FPS difference when you compare it to older source titles.

thats a horribly slow cpu for many modern games. even in games that utilize more than 2 cores most newer dual core cpus will run rings around it. at least you only have a 4670 so not too much is going to waste.

I kinda figured it was the CPU. Glad to know.

Now to decide if I should upgrade. I consider myself more of a causal gamer than hardcore.

Plus what to update? Just CPU or MOBO too?

I really wanted to make sure what was causing this issue.

I suppose for L4D2 I could try the FPS config file....http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1034100

I don't plan to really get any more games till I beat the ones I already own. So not sure if forking extra dough for upgrades is worth it.....*shrugs*

Any useful tweaks? Like Catalyst A.I. set to advanced?

Overdrive would have no use?
