FPS games that aren't Arena/Tournament first?

I totally suck at arena/tournament games so Q3 and UT just don't cut it for me. I miss the old Quake. Can anyone recommend a good FPS game that doesn't concentrate on deathmatch?

Thanks

If you miss the good ol' style of play from games like Doom or Quake, you should definately consider Half-Life. You've probably heard that over a million times, so I guess I'm just being redundant. Other good alternatives to the wave of death-match based games are Deus Ex, System Shock 2, the original Unreal, Thief 1 & 2, and maybe even the expansion set for HL, Opposing Force. They all concentrate completely on a good solid single player experience and two of them don't even have multi-player support. Anyway, pick up a copy of these games and tell me how ya like em.

I think you perhaps check out Deus Ex. It's a first-person shooter with no multiplayer options. Would be awesome with a co-op mode, though. Allow me to pimp the game a little with a quote from the Deus Ex review at firingsquad.com:

Deus Ex is set in the near future. It's a grim time to live, with a widening chasm between rich and poor, and a mysterious plague called the Gray Death sweeping across the world. There is a manufactured cure, called Ambrosia, but the tiny supply is controlled by government agencies (namely FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency) and carefully doled out to the most important people, including government officials, celebrities, and the social elite. The average joe who contracts Gray Death is often left to wither away and die in the gutter because of the supply problems.

...

The player takes the role of JC Denton, a highly trained special agent of UNATCO. One of the key characteristics of UNATCO agents is that they get cybernetic implants to enhance their physical abilities. Some agents choose massive muscle replacements for heavy lifting - others get abilities like hardened skin that can stop bullets. The drawback is that these implants turn the agents into half human, half machine cyborgs. JC Denton is a very special case - he's the second agent to undergo enhancement with a new type of implant technology - nanotech. The new type enhancements are much less invasive and deforming to the agent's appearance. They also have the potential to give even greater powers and abilities than the old type. It's also worth noting that the first agent to get the nanotech implants was Paul Denton - JC's older brother.

Basically, you get to choose the methods you will use to get through the game. Sneaky. In-your-face. From close range. From far away. You get the idea.

Search for it on the Web for download locations. Tell me what ya think, and maybe a fellow forumgoer or two will weigh in with their opinion of the game. I thought it was fantastic.

If you have to buy one FPS this year, get Deus Ex.

If you have 15 bucks laying around, DEFINITELY get System Shock 2.

Hell, 10 bucks will get you Thief.

All 3 of these games are simply awesome and the only one that has multiplayer is System Shock 2, and that's cooperative (which is awesome as well).
