FPS and these Games

Hello. I have recently built a whole new system, for gaming purposes. It is not where i want it to be just yet. My problem comes into play with HL2 and World of Warcraft, the two games i am playing right now. with both of them i have serious FPS drop when things get crazy. Like when more people are running around, panning 360 in open terrain, gryfhon flights. basically whenever i look around real fast my FPS shits the bed. I have the video setting cranked right now, focused on quality. However i don't want to loose this quality because i payed alot of money for it with my new video card.
So if my system isn't the problem for the FPS lose, then do i just have to suffice and drop the quality image?

Here is my computer:

athlon 64 3000+ (i don't know if it is a winchester)
200 GB seagate sata harddrive
512 XMS corsair ddr pc3200
ati x800 xt pe catalyst drivers
abit av8 MOBO

thanks for any useful information.

well 1GB of ram will be a nice addition to your system

but first make sure AA and AF arent set too high in the driver control panel, and maybe a bit daft but always causes problems but have u got the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard?

maybes download everest and just make sure everything checks out, ie cpu speed, graphics speed, and stuff.

Sounds like a classic "not enough RAM" problem to me. I agree that adding another 512MB should take care of these problems you're describing. :)

yeah i was thinking that too, but was just telling him to check the few obvious things first before he presses the nuke button on the order for more RAMage

You always could overclock if you wanted to, but since you have an A64 you shouldn't really need to. I only have an Athlon XP myself (albeit at 2400MHz) and it still runs everything just fine. Of course, I also do have 1GB of RAM. :)

Did you turn off vsync? I personally don't think it's not enough RAM. All the rest of your components are quite fast. But if vysnc is off and you still get the fps drops. Then there ya go :)

You need more ram. I upgraded both my gaming machines from 512mb to 1GB each and all my games run much smoother now. I went from having intermittant hard drive accesssing during games to no accesss at all now.

Upgrade now! :)

Just how high do you things cranked? If you think you are going to do full AA and full AF and then everything to max on HL 2 and not have any slowdown, you have another thing coming
