I'm waiting on a confirmation e-mail from dfi-street.com to post this over there but I know we're pretty knowledgeable over here so I thought I'd post it here as well.
First, system specs:
Antec Neopower 480W
Opteron 144 @ 1.8
2x512 Kingston Hyper-X (2-2-2-6)
WD 120GB
CDRW
ATI Radeon X800 128MB PCI-E
The variable:
DFI Infinity DAGF versus DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D
ALLLLL Settings are unaltered. All drivers, settings etc are all exactly the same. The motherboard is litterally swapped with the components and booted back up. This means I'm using all the same drivers, settings, etc. This is a fresh install of Windows xp pro using Catalyst 6.1 and nVidia 6.70 nforces and Service pack 2.
Windows boots, 3DMark 05 is run. Scores about 3250 3DMarks using the Lanparty Ultra-D. All the scores are inline with no very low or very high scores. The system is shut down, the motherboards swapped and rebooted. BIOS settings on both boards are set to default. Bring up Windows on the Infinity DAGF, run 3DMark 05 and get 3900 3DMarks. All the various tests including the CPU test go up an equal amount to produce the score appropriately. I have no explanation for this. I also checked FPS using the X3 Demo and the new Trackmania and they also produce a difference.
In an attempt to fix this I've tried the following:
Changing to ATI Catalyst 5.12 drivers
Setting the RAM settings to exactly the same (2-2-2-6) on both boards
Reinstalling windows
Checking GPU clocks (390/350)
I've also changed the bios from the 6/32s to the beta 0704's with no change.
NOTHING can explain this except an actual performance loss due to the motherboard or some very odd bios setting.
For reference the Infinity is a Nforce4 939 16X PCI-E non-ultra but virtually the same motherboard.
The Lanparty Ultra-D is equal but is an Nforce4 Ultra chipset...
I can't explain this or fix it. I'm going to send back the Ultra if this keeps up. That's a huge performance loss!
EDIT:::::: Found the problem. Believe it or not, I guess the bottom PCI-E slot which is full speed is slower. Go figure. I moved it to the top and now its performing great!
