I watch and enjoy Anderson Cooper, and I don't really like Greta that much. But I do find myself watching FOX more than CNN. That's probably because of my political views, however, it seems more people are tuning in to FOX lately. This does seem kinda classless by FOX, but I am suprised CNN really cares that much.

Text
February 1, 2007 -- RATINGS-challenged CNN is flipping out over a taunting Fox News Channel ad that cattily compares the also-ran cable network's dapper newsman Anderson Cooper to Paris Hilton.

In a big spread in Television Week magazine, Fox, which regularly trounces CNN in viewership, has a shot of Cooper from behind posing for a team of paparazzi who are frantically snapping his picture. "Meet the Paris Hilton of Television News," the ad crows. It then accuses the silver-maned talking head of being a "media darling" who's the product of "endless hype," but is really all "style over substance."

The ad also claims CNN has shelled out "tens of millions of dollars in advertising" to put Cooper on the map, "and he still gets beaten every night by 'On the Record With Greta Van Susteren' - the No. 1 show at 10 p.m." But don't expect CNN to take the insulting swipe sitting down. "They are preparing their answer to the Fox ad and you can expect something next week . . . It's war," a CNN insider told Page Six.

A CNN flack called Fox's ad an "act of desperation because Greta's audience has been eroding and 'Anderson Cooper 360 Degrees' is getting closer. This is a sign they are starting to panic." The rep also denied CNN had spent tens of millions to hype Cooper, but wouldn't say what it has doled out.

Fox countered that Van Susteren's show was the fifth-highest rated program in cable news while Cooper was a distant 17th. One executive at Fox - owned by News Corp., which also owns The Post - told us, "Obviously, we hit a nerve for them to overreact to this degree. Is this what they came up with while they were sunning themselves at the Atlantis?"

The Fox exec was referring the lavish trip to the Bahamas that 100 CNN suits enjoyed last month - much to the chagrin of network rank-and-file during the week when CNN suffered a jolting third-place finish among cable-news channels in coverage of the State of the Union Address.

Does kinda seem like Anderson Cooper is often "on location" just so we can see Anderson Cooper is "on location".

look Ma, Anderson Cooper is leaning into the hurricane force winds again.

that, and he says his own name a lot..

CNN has declined in quality quite a bit, and FOX is just pandering to their base in an obvious and pathetic manner. I don't watch either of them to be honest.

Greta Van Susteren's show is #1 at the 10 PM time slot? I must be really out of sync with public tastes-I feel contaminated just flipping through Fox when that's on.

I agree that CNN has declined quite a bit since it has gone on it's campaign to out flash Fox. Frankly these days, if I watch a cable news channel for over five minutes it's most likely MSNBC. Except for Keith Oberman, MSNBC tends to stay away from the angry pundits (and even Oberman can be frequently entertaining). But even MSNBC certainly is perfect-their never-ending series of documentaries inside prisons (10 PM timeslot) has gotten really old, and don't even get me going on the catch a child predator shows.

The big media fights to boost rating---Fox vs. CNN----or Trump vs. Rosie.

Pay no attention to either of the fighters and it will go away---right now both sides laugh all the way to the bank---pay no attention gets them hitching a ride to the poor house--which is where they belong.

Cnn international is the only decent news channel available in the US. I usually end up watching CBNC to get at least some relevant news (oh noes, * happened to another white girl... 24-7 coverage for the next 2 weeks)

Isn't her show just a slightly less annoying version of Nancy Grace?

I like the MSNBC prison shows<shrug>.

CNN is just plain annoying, especially The Situation Room, probably the most annoying thing ever, Blitzer just needs to be slapped sometimes.

I pretty only watch the Daily Show, unless I am channel surfing.
CNN is OK to get your news, but so is google. It's kind of dry, but I do at least trust them.
FOX news is just rightwing propaganda all the way. They'll basically tell you the party line until it is completely discredited. Also, what's the deal with O'Really's face expression analysis segment? Takes away any pretension of the Factor being a serious program, IMO.
MSNBC is prisons, murderers, and pedophiles 24x7. I don't see the point of the channel at all if they don't have news on it.

They both have their political agendas. CNN is just as skewed as Fox is. There is no such thing as an unbiased news source. I trust CNN as much as I trust Fox, BBC, and any other mass media outlet, which isn't much at all.

That's your opinion. I happen to trust CNN and BBC, and I consider Fox to be a rightwing tabloid news channel.

Obviously it's just my opinion, but I'm really at a loss why someone would trust one spin over another. I mean, I'm more comfortable with the Fox spin because I generally lean to the right, but I never make the mistake of actually treating what they tell me as fact. I read and watch many different news sources and I realize that the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

QFT.

But while CNN's antics are amateurish and lame, FOX is downright corporate and professional in their efforts to replace journalism with opinion. No one comes close to FOX when it comes to running filler and/or just not even mentioning actual news when it proves damaging to their political idealogy.

Two lame networks getting their panties in a wad, not a big deal.

There is a difference. CNN at least attempts to be objective. Fox is blatant and institutionalized rightwing propaganda. I watch CNN when I just want the news, I watch Fox just to see what the rightwing take on the news is.

The Neocon wing of the right and their allies are just so much better at agitprop and 'the Big Lie' than the moderates like CNN. Their associated news outlets cook the info and spin it with greater skill. Not to say that it doesn't show up nowadays in more outlets of every stripe.

Shouting that's supposed to pass for interviewing, and a minute or two of polemics on what are very involved issues have really ruined my interest in many of those shows. It is a shame that they don't have more real dialogue between the divergent points of view. But the 'News' is becoming more and more twisted entertainment....

The whole Anderson Cooper paparazzi thing illustrated the whole cult of personality aspect that dominates much of our culture today. Just like the whole Obama mania. Oh look a black man who speaks good, is mainstream and looks good on TV :sigh: Same thing with Clinton and the whole Arsenio Hall thing.
Too much attention on the personality and not enough attention to the content. That works for prime time TV, but not network news. Just ask CBS and the Curic flop.
