FoxIT PDF Reader/Converter vs Adobe Acrobat Reader

Hey All,

. I just found out about this FoxIT PDF reader/converter this weekend and thought you all might want to know. Pardon if this reads like ad agency drivel, but I tend to write like that when I'm enthused...

. Have you ever wondered why the Adobe Acrobat (PDF file) reader is so cumbersome and bloated. Why when you download a PDF directly into the Adobe plug-in in your browser, it is so much slower than downloading it to disk and then loading it into the reader. And what about the splash screen and slow loading of the plug-in - and the update hassle which seems like all the time...

. Well, now you don't have to deal with those annoyances any more. Just download the ~1MB zip file, expand it into the directory (folder) where you want it and run it. And if you need oriental character support (I seem to get that message a lot when loading .PDFs), FoxIT has you covered, but the file is bigger than the .zip of the program (but still under 2MB). Just copy that into the folder where you put your your FoxIT reader program and you're set.
. Not only does the program read PDFs, it also converts files from most any program into PDFs by acting as a printer driver - just print your file to FoxIT and voila!
. Well Adobe's reader, etc. is gone from my system and I have about 100 more free MB of hard drive space than I had before and my PDF handling is now both FAST and hassle-free.
. It also works with IE and other browsers to automatically display PDFs, but I found that with Mozilla I had to uninstall Adobe and set up FoxIT as a "helper" program. Its Mime Type is: application/pdf and its file extension is pdf .

There ya go - enjoy!

Download it from http://www.MajorGeeks.com or direct from the author at http://www.foxitsoftware.com - he has a few other neat items that might interest you.

.bh.

Bumpage is appreciated!

Bump for a great program. Acrobat fvcks the computers up at school so i use this on my flash drive.

Oh yeah, scrolling through pages is blazing fast even if you have a hundred+ page pdf open.

what dll? the zip i downloaded only had 1 exe file

nope...my download from foxit had a .dll in it that it wont work without it...i could have an old version

edit...yep, i had an old version...modified original post

Bump because I just found this program on my own by searching for an opensource PDF viewer. I'm in love with this program. Screw Adobe. I always hated installing all that bloat just to view PDF files...no I have little to no reason to create pdfs...yet

Hmm, they completely ripped off the look and feel of Adobe Reader. They better hope that Adobe doesn't get wind of them. I'm sure that Adobe's icons are copyrighted.

FoxIt Reader kicks Adobe's ass all over the place. It's so damn fast 🙂

PS: People who install Adobe Acrobat (the editor) and use it as a reader should die a painful death :|

I wasn't referring to your post 😛

I don't like the title of this thread. It should read "SPAM for a cool new free product." I will do the title justice by telling the readers that it isn't a 100% replacement of AAR. One thing it lacks is it's ability to display PDFs within your browser. Adobe does this, Foxit can't. In my university's blackboard system professors often use pdfs for their syllubi and for some reason they are linked so they open up within the browser. _Yes_ I could just rightclick - save as. I'm just saying, it lacks this feature.

Foxit reader also lacks a good searching function. I opened a pdf with foxit reader and tried surching for a sentence, that I knew was in the pdf file. It came up with nothing. I did the same thing within Adobe and it found it.

I still use foxit reader when I can. I like how fast it opens up, but for more advanced operations it seems that adobe is more capable.

I'd argue that this is not a flaw w/ fixit reader, but a flaw in the sense that your university is still using blackboard..and to compound it, they are using pdf's in it...... (ya sure u cant right click and "save as" , i couldn't imagine trying to read a pdf w/in those huge blackboard frames, you probly see 3 lines at a time.... 😛

Flaw? Didn't say that. "shortcoming", on the otherhand, is a more proper description. The fact that my university still uses blackboard has nothing to do with anything. It's not the only time I've come across a pdf image such as this.

Ok, let's see who needs to improve their reading comprehension!

Hmmm...

I use Foxit exclusively on all my machines at home. Unfortunately I haven't been able to convince my company to dump the horridly bloated Adobe suite for this simple program. Gets a big  from me.

I use Foxit, but to be fair I've heard that the latest Acrobat release is much less bloated than the previous versions. Whether or not that's true, I really haven't been motivated to find out =).
