Experts suggest Hamas overestimated Arab world support for strikes on Israel

If Hamas thought provoking an Israeli crackdown by raining rockets down on the Jewish state would rally Arab nations to its side, it may have miscalculated badly, experts told FoxNews.com.

“One of the things that may have affected Hamas’ calculus in terms of being able to run more risk with Israel is that they sense there’s a new Egypt,” said Dennis Ross of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. “There is sympathy [in Egypt] for what is going on in Gaza, but going to war with Israel is not attractive to Egypt.”

“The regional picture now, with the Arab Spring, suggests that Hamas will have more support,” Abrams said. “But it isn’t working out that way. The key country is Egypt, which is talking about its support for Hamas but not giving much concrete support.

“I think Egypt sees itself, with 85 million people, as far more important than Hamas in Gaza with 1.5 million,” he continued. “Morsi does not want the tail to wag the dog and threaten his own relations with the U.S. and even with Israel. He wants the fighting to stop, because a ground war would inflame opinion in Egypt and perhaps force his hand, and ruin relations with the U.S.”

First off I acknowledge the bullshit use of unnamed "experts" Fox pretends to quote.

The facts, though, are consistent with what I have been saying for many months. The newly created and elected democratic governments that have come into being from the Arab Spring are not radical islamist governments. Their main priority is improving the lives of their citizens. Not going on holy crusades.

Republican criticism of these new regimes is going to backfire.

Even ol' Georgie Bush the Junior understood that democratic governments are less likely to engage in unprovoked wars than dictatorships.

Hypocritical old fools like John McCain who sat down with Khadafy and offered him his support to buy C-130 Hercules planes are going to pay for it. Especially when it wasn't long after that McCain called the Libyan rebels his "heroes". Yeah, heroes he was betraying by selling military hardware to the dictator that was murdering them.

If Israel can somehow avoid a land invasion and come to some agreement again with Hamas that would be the best solution under the current circumstances. The new democratic governments need as much time of peace and tranquility as possible to acclimate thier people to democratic rule and to, hopefully, actual improve things in their countries.

Hamas always has over estimated what it is capable of and who will stand beside them.

Muslim countries will stand well behind them so as to not catch the shrapnel flying around.
the Palestinians are fodder; second class, below them.

I was listening to a Mid-East studies professor yesterday on NPR and one point he made was that Hamas was quite likely being driven towards this because smaller, more radical groups are attracting all the youth in Gaza, Hamas is trying to remain relevant with them.

Think rebranding, like "it's not your father's Buick any more."

Hopefully these youth realize this is not a Call of Duty Xbox game.

He must not be taking a gander of his own party lately. ;)

You or experts. Umm, I'll pick them over you. Egypt cooperates with Hamas but if its a choice between itself or Hamas the latter will be thrown under the bus. Egyptian interests mean that the status quo will remain in spite of their bluster.
