well, he has a history of it. I don't like the guy anyways. Of course, I'm just probably spoiled by Vin Scully, but baseball is all about classic commentators w/ that vintage voice. Lyons? no. he's not great of a commentator. It's probalby only me, but he makes comments that make me go "uhh, ok. awkward..." Might just be me. I'm sure there are others out there. This isn't the first time he made an off-topic comment that wasn't funny. His timing sucks.

I've never heard of that either.

The wallet comment made by Pinella refereced a guy getting lucky and not to count on it again.

Seems to me Lyons was "playing off" that comment. I'd like to hear it live, the inflection used is often terribly important to the meaning conveyed. Like if he said "I still can't find MY wallet", meaning HE has no luck. Which, judging by the story I'd say he was correct.

Whole thing seems stupid, and an over-reaction to me.

I just find it funny that FOX of all networks is firing someone for that. Hell I'd expect them to give him a raise and a promotion.

i think fox was looking for a reason to dump lyons considering his past track record and this was their reason to do it. im convinced of this by how quickly it all occured, especially telling him right after the game ended.

if anything, tim mccarver should be fired for being offensive to my ears with his suck-up and not to mention sucky broadcasting.

What the... this is even more benign than the rush limbaugh / mcnabb thing a couple years back, and even that was blown out of proportion.

"on hot" doesn't make any sense.

The article didn't say fuego was hot, it said "en fuego" was hot, which is basically the meaning conveyed.

The meaning conveyed is that the player is "on fire," which is a common term in sports. There was no reason to change it to something innacurate, the literal meaning was fine. It's just bad reporting.

Well, I'm glad he's gone as he's a lousy commentator, but they also need to replace the other guys, especially Thom Brenneman, they're just murdering the sports they cover.

But I just cannot believe that first article mentioned Steve Lyons dropping his pants during a game, along with all the terrible comments he's made. That's just downright bad journalism to try and deceive people. He dropped his pants after sliding head-first into first base and getting a lot of dirt down his pants, and wanted to shake the dirt out. It certainly was not any lewd display as the article would have you think.

Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week.

Finding a wallet is good and hoping to find another one... hmmm. Does that mean he KEEPS the wallet? :p

Pretty obvious it was a play on the earlier comment by Piniella. I'm pretty sure there were no Hispanic people calling in protest, stealing wallets isn't even a stereotype for them. Over reaction by Fox, but they probably wanted him gone anyway.

His family is from Spain.

Hah... I had no idea hispanics were stereotyped as being thieves, but if they were it'd be more accurate to say it's a latino stereotype since it probably wouldn't include Spanish people. Which makes it strange to fire the guy over this unless they wanted to fire him for other reasons.

So Fox did this because they were afraid he might have offended Spaniards?

Man, I guess us Canadians just don't know all the subtleties of Hispanic/American relationships. I sure wouldn't have seen that as a racist comment.

I'm an American and I don't see it either...

Yes, exactly.

Hispanic - anyone from a Spanish-speaking country.
Latino - Latin-Americans.

Anyway, my intention was evident... latinos (or Latin-Americans) are stereotyped in this country, while most Americans couldn't pick out a person of Spanish descent if they saw them.
