fowarding ports

modem/router combo->buffalo wireless router->switch->pcs

should this be all I have to do to foward a port?

modem/router combo:

Current DMZ Status: Enabled
Current DMZ Host IP Address: 192.168.254.6

that's my WAN ip ^ for the buffalo router.

buffalo router

port fowarding..

port from: 34950 port to: 34950
protocol: both
ip: 192.168.10.110 (ip for computer I want it fowarded to)

..I don't have windows firewall enabled.. the only other thing I have is kaspersky anti-virus.. but not the firewall or anything.

but for some reason when I check an online port checker.. it says it's closed still.

I've double checked to make sure I'm using the right IPs and everything.. do you think it's something with my switch? ..cause it use to work when I didn't have the switch there.. and just plugged my computers straight into the buffalo router.. but I needed to put in my switch so I could transfer my files over 1gb line.

it worked for a while like this but i had to power off/on the router a couple of times and it will randomly work and decide not to.

You're dual-router setup is making this far more complicated than it needs to be.

I presume you only have the Buffalo for wireless access, correct? If that's the case you should disable the DHCP server on the Buffalo (if you haven't already) and drop it off of the switch. Your new setup should look like this:

Modem/Router -> Switch -> Buffalo and PCs

Now, I can't help you much with port forwarding because I don't know the make/model of your Modem/Router doohickey. But since you found the DMZ setup I'm pretty sure you can find the port forwarding page (if the device has that functionality). Now simply specify a rule to forward specific ports to a PC on the network.

Lastly, when using port forwarding or a DMZ it's a good idea to set the destination PC up with a static IP address.

Good luck!

I changed my setup to this

modem/router combo -> switch -> pc1 , buffalo.. etc

but I can't get the ports to foward correctly on pc1 .. the only router/firewall between it is the modem/router combo

I tried setting the modem/router to factory default settings.. put back in my ISP login info.. and then fowarded the port.

if I try fowarding the port 3389 (remote desktop port) it opens fine.

but if I try a random port number 48353 it stays closed.. but I'm doing the same thing that I'm doing with the remote desktop port.. so it makes no sense.

any ideas?

EDIT:

I just tested and 3389 is open on pc2 (192.168.254.10) as well.. as pc1 (192.168.254.12)

I fowarded the port to pc1 (.12) though.. after I noticed it was open on both pcs I disabled he port fowarding.. and now it's closed on both.

so I guess it's not fowarding it to the right computer or something..

The "random port" is probably not working because it also needs to be opened on the computer's software firewall.

Which program are you trying to forward? And you can't forward to more than one computers at the same time.

I don't have any firewall software installed on my computer.. not even windows firewall.

I just use my router, and kaspersky anti-virus.

I only had 3389 fowarded to 192.168.254.12 ..but somehow it said it was open on both that machine and also 192.168.254.10 ..then when I deleted the foward it said it was closed again on both computers.

the random port or program I'm trying to foward is uTorrent.. I was just trying to use random ports 48574 35849 etc.. but I couldn't get any other port opened besides 3389 .. and for some reason it was showing that it was open on both pcs when I only fowarded it to 1.
