For MS SQL server they need (want) a four socket (Xeon 7300 series) board.
What's a good set up these days for in house built?
Love to say I could help, but I just wanted to add... Jesus! Four CPU's! 4 Cores each! 16 Cores! 32 Threads! for MS SQL?! wow...
I want to add sth
What the FVKC!!!!
YOU know how much 7300 each is?!
3000+ US dollars!!!!!!!!!!!
actually if the DB query are a lot but not so complex (3000 to 5000 ms query) I think that a 4 socket G34 mainboard like this http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron6100/SR56x0/H8QG6-F.cfm will give you a much better price to performance ratio because you can use 4*12 core Opteron for a total of 48 threads and also BE READY TO CPU UPGRADE WITH BULLDOZER.
considering a 7 years lifespan with a MLU after 4 years for CPU, RAM and storage this server can give you a much better TCO
