For MS SQL server they need (want) a four socket (Xeon 7300 series) board.

be careful with the MS SQL license , AFIK there is a limit on how many core you can use , so you must have a "by user" license or go with an unlimited core license , but this is very expensive

BTW are you already running this DB on SLC SSD ? this upgrade can give you much more power than a CPU upgrade.

actually if the DB query are a lot but not so complex (3000 to 5000 ms query) I think that a 4 socket G34 mainboard like this http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/motherboard/Opteron6100/SR56x0/H8QG6-F.cfm will give you a much better price to performance ratio because you can use 4*12 core Opteron for a total of 48 threads and also BE READY TO CPU UPGRADE WITH BULLDOZER.

considering a 7 years lifespan with a MLU after 4 years for CPU, RAM and storage this server can give you a much better TCO

Surely the ammount of traffic required to use this ammount of power would suggest that using a single server is a bad choice...?

Actually they recommend turning off HT for SQL.
They want Intel exclusively for this. Yowzers those processors are expensive!
Twelve 128GB DDR based solid state drives are expensive too!
Only 300 users though. Did not realize it would be that much of a pig.
