Oh man, am I the only one who hears Yakety Sax in his head when reading a headline like this?

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/09/w...ia-crashed-in-iran-us-officials-say.html?_r=0

Edit: Really, Brian is right though.

Not to bust anyone's bubble here, but you do know that we've had some cruise missiles do off course in the past -- right?

I don't know how often the Russians have actually used these weapons before or how recently but my guess is they have less experience with there's than we do with ours.

That said, it does further complicate the rules of engagement in Syria and surrounding areas in the region.

Hahaha where are the people who called Obama weak against Putin?

Brain > Brawn especially with Russian weapons.

India buys a shit load of military armaments from Russia and it's started to buy American made instead just because of this.. the stuff made in Russia isn't reliable.

To quote Jeb Bush in street vernacular: So as with thousands of trigger happy American idiots running around with guns in the streets, so too with Russian idiots running around the middle east armed with missiles: "Shit happens".

edit- In some small way, I feel sorry for those Russians that let loose those errant missiles. Putin being Putin, he's going to take care of them in the style that Kim Jong-un is famous for.

And bombing a hospital full of non-combatants or an occasional mosque here and there. ;)

Not that I'm aware of.

Maybe hit a target that shouldn't have been due to bad intel, but only one I can think off. It's not a flying off course issue in those regards.

Just a Russian oppsie, Vlad has it covered :p

“There are radars and all sorts of new control systems, and of course we need a firing range,” Konstantin Remchukov, the editor of Nezavisimaya Gazeta, told the Echo of Moscow radio station this week.

The highly technical response.

It doesn't seem like they really went off course. More that they were on course and the propulsion failed, dropping to the ground.

It seems our Tomahawk have an ~85% success rate of operating as intended. About the same as these Russian missiles if this story is valid.

That would never happen in America. Our rockets never fail.

Further information indicates they were new missiles and therefore not fully tested. I'm not sure that 85% is the current success rate for our cruise missiles but when we first started using them they would have been lucky to reach 85%.

We don't know what happened to them and we're not likely to ever know as the Ruskies aren't likely to tell us.

The bigger question I have is why the used them in the first place. I mean, they are already in Syria so what's the point to using up expensive missiles when a much less expensive sortie from an SU-24/35 will do the job.

The most likely answer is that they wanted real world testing of the new missiles.

Pretty much this, I would imagine.

Something they've done quite a few times in those proxy wars they've sponsored over the years. IMO, every nation that is a major player in the sale of weapon systems want to test their ware in real world situations, just as these vendors of death want to show off and advertise how well their shit works to drum up sales. Germany did it in Spain during their own pre-WWII Civil War if I recall, as prep/test for their own war with the Allies and Soviets.

The 85% was what was first claimed for Desert Storm. Later reports claimed 50%. Percentage of exactly what, I don't know. Was just sort of saying that a few of these things not working right isn't much of a determination of Russia's capabilities.

Any chance they are unexploded and in good enough condition for Iranians to reverse engineer? If so, it does not seem like a very good idea for US DOD to tip Iranians off to that possibility.

So frequently I want to hate Conservatards more because they seem so batshit insane, but it is tough when Libtards make such arrogantly gauche statements like the one above. They pretend to desire the high road but their statements so often betray them to prove they are on the very same level of insanity.

Stay classy, tards of all stripes.

There is success, there is failure, and then there is missing a target by a minimum of at least 120 miles...

The bigger piece of news in all this is Iran's approval for Russia to fly warheads through their airspace. In my opinion.

Why would you want to reverse engineer something that failed?

I don't find that surprising at all. According to various news reports, Iran has been actively lobbying the Ruskies to become fully involved. Of course they'd allow the Russians to use their airspace to do so.
