Four People Die in Water Park Garden Pool

Not enough info to have an opinion, other then thats horrible.
Some say she slipped, others say she had on a swimsuit (Implying she intended to swim...)

Even if she had a swimswuit on I don't blame the kid, she was only 8. I would blame irresponsible parenting but her father did die trying to rescue her which is awful enough so in the end it's pretty tragic regardless of blame.

Pretty obvious from the following that they intended to get into the pools...

"The Rev. Gerald M. Dew, pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, said the man and children had gone to the Fort Worth Water Gardens to play because the pool at their nearby hotel was closed. "

Apparently, God told the pastor of the church whose event the deceased family was attending what to say to console his "flock".

Unreal. You would think the adult could have overcome the pump suction.

Here is the story.

If a home pool pump can rip the intestines out of your body (by sitting on it with your butt), I'd hate to imagine what a larger pump in an area not designed for swimming could do to a person.

well design pool in terms of aesthetics and practicality. poorly design in terms of safety. there should've been a heavy duty cover over the pump (under two feet of water?)

tragic 🙁

It's sad about the deaths, but this is bs:
Jesse Spann, one of the church's deacons, said there are no barriers around the area and that steps lead down to the swirling pool. "As a child, when you see a waterfall, you think you can go play and swim there," he said.
Let's ruin yet another area and put up fences, gates, etc.

Again, safety design has nothing to do with it since the pool was not intended for swimming.

"died while trying to rescue her from a decorative pool where "No swimming" signs were posted."

rbloedow, excellent articles. I did not realize that this is such a problem. The two-outlet solution seems perfect -- if one outlet becomes clogged by someone's body part, the other outlet relieves the pressure. No need for elaborate high covers.

I heard on a local news report that the pump in question was running 4K gallons/minute

Fort Worth Water Gardens. Here, 10,000 gallons of water rush down a 38-foot wall every minute. The spectacular effect is a focal point for a soothing combination of sculpture and fountains. It also played a role in the 1975 sci-fi classic, Logan?s Run.

I agree on the poor design. Nobody should die from being in water fountain pool. If the suction is that strong, I would expect some sort of fence around it.

I don't think this is the first fatality either....

Many years ago, a man was killed when one of the light poles at the water gardens fell on him.

Oh, and if any you remember Logan's Run, thats where they shot the 'escape'.

i hate swimming, i am also a victim when i was little but the ponds didn't have suction like this. but still its parrent irrisponsibility. no one else to blame really

You'd think so, but apparently the pumps are marketed with having a pulling force of 700 pounds. This is according to a brochure of Sta-Rite, a leading manufacturer of pool supplies. The brochure was dredged up at a trial for another accident involving pool pumps.

Heh, well what if they're idiots who couldn't read? I don't think they should get any money but I do think that they should have actually put some sort of 'warning' up. No Swimming signs don't generally mean anything other than 'please keep our water clean' or 'we don't want your nasty body in our fountain because it is beautiful'. I know the average person would not associate a 'No Swimming' sign with 'If you swim here then there is a chance that your intestines will be ripped out of your body through your arse'

A no swimming sign means NO SWIMMING. It is not a freaking novel, no need to read into it.

A very sad story 🙁 I would not assume they went swimming there, they probably suited up for the pool @ their hotel and then just went to a fun place when they found it was closed. Water is a very powerful attraction for little kids. I don't think they are idiots, I think the one girl made a mistake and the rest lost their life trying to rescue her.

Then you haven't seen this water garden. 10k of water rushing isn't a play park, it's quite obvious it's dangerous. I work a couple of blocks away from it.

The signs are small, the local officials wanted to increase the size of the signs over the last two years, but park officials didn't want to ruin the astetics of the place.

It's a pretty screwed up situation, but let me just point a few things out. It's hot here, and humid. 90F plus humidity, plus walking around downtown all day (the convention center, hotel and water park are all within walking distance). The pool was not open at thier hotel (why mention this if they weren't trying to get wet and cool down).

Edit: The parent(s) shouldn't have taken kids there w/ swimming suits on, there is no swimming allowed. Should have changed the kids so as not to encourage them to get in.
