Found this Dell XPS 730 Monstrosity discarded - what should I do with and old 4-way crossfire setup?

So I found this thing and couldn't help but bring it home just out of sheer curiosity.

It was a top of the line model - intel core 2 extreme QX9770, 8GB of DDR2, and dual ATI 3870x2's in crossfire. 1000W PSU. The case is a monster - it has to be at least 50 lbs.

Anyway, the water cooling setup was making a bunch of noise and it would shut off after 30 seconds. I figured it was overheating, so I took off the watercooler and set some old heatsink towers on the CPU and the northbridge chipsets and put a little weight on them.

That got the thing to POST, but it would get hung up randomly. Out of every 3 posts, the 4th would fail.

I couldn't find any rhyme or reason to it. I figure with the cooling system showing up DOA the board was probably overheated and its flaky now. I notice the CPU regularly goes for north of $200 on ebay! Wow! That doesn't seem right but whatever, I will throw it up there and see how it does.

The GPUs seem to work. Should I sell these individually or would a matched pair for crossfire sell better together?

The jury is still out regarding re-using this case. I kind of like it, but I can also think of easier things to work on.....

The 1KW power supply is nice though.

Wow, what a beast.

Reminds me of the PC I built my BIL. Q9550 @ 3.5, 8GB DDR2, dual HD6870 video cards, Windows 7 64-bit.

If that is the aluminum case , it's a solid score . I have seen some serious mods on that case . Search xps 730 case mods .

Yeah, its the aluminum case one. I tried posting a picture last night but IMGUR was down.

My only concern with re-using the case would be that dells are known to have separate IO cards for the front panel I'd have to figure out, and its not readily apparent how to take things apart to route cables, but it does have a lot of room to it and is a standard ATX mounting scheme.

I can't believe how much these 3870x2s weigh.

If people are still paying $220 for that processor, they are on crack. It was a fantastic processor. 8 years ago.

I don't know anything about that XPS, but I do about that 5150 setting next to it... and it's BTX board.

Yeah, I grabbed the other system hoping it was at least a core2duo so I could use it as an HTPC for a friend. Turns out that particular dell maxes out at Pentium Ds.....no bueno. Oh well, back to the pile for that one.

The QX9770 sold for $155 on ebay about 3 hours after I posted it.

Now I'm not sure if its worth listing these 3870 x2s....
