I recently moved into my grandparents house and needed to connect my computer to the internet for work. Their existing setup is a single PC on a Verizon DSL connection. I thought I could just wedge a wireless router in their setup and run my PC over a wireless connection. So snag a Linksys Wireless B router and hook it up according to Linksys' directions. These directions include their onscreen setup which first tells me to leave the DSL connection on while it runs a set of diagnostics. It does a check to see if the PC can access the internet, which passes, it then has me connect the router as I normally would, connecting the PC's NIC to the hub on the router, and connecting the internet port to the DSL modem, and at this point I click "next" as it tries to configure the router, and it says it can't even reach the router to configure it! Now this baffles me, since I'm on MY PC right now which not only connects to the internet just fine, but I can reach the router and configure it from here as well! I even brought the router to my PC to double check the hub was working, I disabled the wireless connection and connected it to my NIC with an ethernet cable and I could reach the admin tools just fine! However I cannot do so with the PC that was here before, it can't even obtain an IP address from the router.
I have the network connection (in WinXP) set to default pretty much, all automatic settings with DHCP enabled. The router is all default as well except for the PPPoE settings so I can get online....
Cliffs notes:
My wireless network connection works
Wired PC upstairs does not work, won't even reach the router/doesn't even get an IP address
Router obviously is working fine
I need some suggestions since I can't for the life of me figure out why this connection isn't working, there's no reason it shouldn't from what I can see. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm desparate and need to get this working ASAP. Thanks so much for any help!
