I found some for sale not too far away. The seller got rid of the car and only used them for one 300 mile trip.
They are Dean Wintercats, made by cooper tire and sold at Les Scwabs.
Does that sound like a reasonable deal, 4 studs on new 16" black steel rims?

Assuming studs are legal where you live, that's a great deal. I got 4 studless winter tires on 16" steelies last fall for 400. I can't speak for the Dean tires but considering the fact that 4 Blizzaks cost more new than what I paid for the whole thing, it should work out great for you.

Have you checked the offset and bolt pattern to make sure they match?

This. Take your car with you and make sure the things actually fit. Don't trust that the guy selling it told you the correct size and don't assume you know how to measure it.

my current car and last car use the same diameter rims and tires with the same number of bolts but the bolt positions are different. When I bought a new car, I had to put my old tires on new rims before I could use them.

yeah I'm taking the Pilot down there. He has a set of ultra 20's with toyo proxes on them too. If he makes me a good enough deal my wife will have the rockin' ride!
