Journey was a great band in the Rolie + Schon + Perry days of the Infinity and Evolution albums.

You know, whats really funny is when I first got in the biz, I thought the same way. After getting an education in music writing and structure, however, I came to appreciate what Jon Cain brought to the table. It wasn't until I worked with Steve Perry did I appreciate what a good musician and songwriter he really is. A PITA, perhaps, but damn, the dude has ears and a knack for putting words and melody together to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
In fact, the one credit I have with the band as a songwriting contributor, came from supplying Steve Perry with the opening line of the track,"I Can See it In Your Eyes". It was used as the BONUS track for the Trial By Fire Japanese release. After listening to them go through the song for the umpteenth time, it hit me and I scribbled., "I used to love you, girl." on a sheet of paper and held it up to the control room window. Steve was sitting with his back to me, facing the band in the studio, and Ross said, "I think Allen may have something for you Steve." He read it, Gave me a thumbs up and sang it on the next run through and the rest is history. NOW, mind you when they were divinding up the percentages, I was told in no uncertain terms that I would not be getting paid for it, but I would get my name added to the credits. Which was fine by me, as one must start somewhere, and starting with those guys is a good place to start, in my opinion.
