looking at 2 hp laptops here are the specs.

I'll be using this comp for school, games like css and civilization and media of course.

I'm thinking the amd one (#2) is the way to go. what do you think?

Both look like good laptops. I think they are very close in performance and would probably lean toward the AMD machine like you said. Memory can easily be upgraded but the video card can not and the ATI card is probably a better performer. As for the CPU the Intel may be a little faster in some areas but not enough to make it a clear "winner." I say go with the laptop that best suits your needs and only you can make that choice but I agree I like the AMD rig.
