Because all the poor people are poor because they spend they're money wrong or are lazy.

I bet you're a republican.

Sounds to me like he was merely implying that a budget streamlining could help as well.

You'd be surprised at the things you can cut from your budget when you track all your expenses.

help is always a good thing...if more people would do it..

you realize you can buy booze and tobacco at grocery stores.

You realize that they aren't likely to allow gift cards as method of payment for alcohol, tobacco, etc?

AND, if they do allow it, I'm sure the church has a way to keep these things from being purchased.

I've known a fair amount of families below the poverty line. Roughly half of the parents or guardians still smoke and drink. Went to one friend's house when we were in high school... "Hey XXX, you got anything to eat?" He said something like "I'm not sure man, look in the fridge" I did. ONE bowl of some pasta slop that was OLD. Yet, his mom and step dad are in the living room puffing away and drinking all kinds of beer and smoking the occasional doob.

I have no problem with people smoking and drinking, as long as their kids are being provided for. To have those habits and not support your family is irresponsible.

Okay...back on topic.

I'd say a raise is in order, even a buck an hour is roughly $100-120 a month after taxes. That's $5 a day the lady could use for lunches. I take my lunch to work and it can be done for significantly less than $5 a day...

No idea what I'm talking about, but ask her what her career aspiration is and then send her to the appropriate training center? With training/certification + awesome letter of recommendation = $$$ in some other company.

Awww gee Forsythe, looks like your little troll attempt failed didnt it?

Looks like other people have a cool head just like me.

Its has nothing to do with whether I'm Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal. It has everything to do with the fact that 99% of ALL families in America can streamline the budget SOMEWHERE.

Case in point, as above smoking and drinking. Drop your cable TV, drop your home phone or cell phone. Keep whichever one is cheaper. Stop buying soda even. Hell, we spend 15-20 bucks a week on SODA in my house. Thats almost 100 bucks a month, just for bubbly water.

Everyone can trim somewhere, except those in the most unfortunate of circumstances who are very level headed and willing to make any sacrifice necessary.

Yes I am. Which is why I think this lady should take responsibility for herself BEFORE people give her handouts.

Funny that, personal responsibility. That doesnt mean there arent people who need a hand, but many just need a head first.

I didnt say that at all.
Any other ASSumptions you wish to make?

Its a goood question. If shes skipping lunches and driving home in her shiny BMW every day, do YOU want to help her out?

Some people truly scrape to get by. She could very well be one of them. Since YOU seem to know, why dont you answer my questions.

The OP did state that she has medical bills for her daughter and her hours were cut and the food money is now going to the medical bills. Did you read the OP? Sounds like you are questioning her motivations when the OP made it pretty clear he believes (and knows) she is having problems.

Edit: As a fellow Republican I do find it amusing when people are told to be personally responsible when they are barely scraping by and skipping meals are "get a better job" or "suck it up" or "get more training" or "why are people quick to give HANDOUTS" usually from the middle and upper class perspective (me being straight middle class). The arrogance of non-compassion is more stunning than amusing. Should she get a free ride? No, of course not but reading the OP sure makes it look like she is having a hard time and most importantly of all IS NOT LOOKING OR ASKING FOR A HANDOUT.

I agree with you that she could streamline her budget possibly but since the OP (and other secretaries) see an issue and presumably know she is worth trying to help why not suggest solutions rather than suggest her potential faults.

A raffle for a nice sized gift check that she will win or a pretend survey (with approval from bosses) in which she wins a prize are good solutions. Checking with the boss to see if there can be a raise (if she is a great worker as the OP appears to think) to help offset the loss in overtime is another option.

I would be wary of acting on any second hand information. You simply do not know the circumstance and nuance of her situation. Organizing anything at this point is stupid until you or someone else asks her about her needs. The subject could easily be broached by her supervisor... have him or her bring it up and asks if she is getting by. If so then leave it alone. If not, then you'll know what she really needs and you won't have to worry about her seeing through your schemes and getting offended.

Classic republican comeback. Yet, you're ignorant enough to keep voting those thieves back into office. You know, the thieves that are continually giving handouts to the wealthiest corporations in the world. I mean, what's 15 or 20 billion here and there, right?

I'd mind my own business. If I were in her position, and I needed help, I'd ask for it. I don't need any unsolicited handouts...

Of course I read the OP. Does that make my questions any less relevant? If she truly does need help a gift card is like pissing on a forest fire. Her first mistake was budgeting OT into her overall budget. I dont care how much OT/shift diff you get, dont expect it to always be there. You never know when something will come along and strip it away.

Moving on, the point of the questions is to give her MEANINGFUL help. See above about pissing on a forest fire.
She she have an ex-husband? Need child support? Maybe a "drawing" (Rigged of course) for a free 1 hour consultation with an attorney is what she needs.
Does she have nice nails and cable? But still cant afford lunch? Maybe a "drawing" (Rigged of course) for a financial planner is in order to get her a budget.

Otherwise, you can eat cheaply. VERY cheaply. I've been there. I've been homeless and worked up to middle class. The arrogance of my non-compassion comes from first hand experience of seeing people sell their food stamps for booze, from buying steaks and shrimp while I eat Ramen. From driving a ncie shiny car while I have a sh1tbox. Yeah, I dont have much use for the poor getting handouts on MY dime.

Now obviously those examples most likely dont apply to her, but none the less you have to understand her financial picture before just saying "Aww gee, she doesnt eat lunch? Lets help!"

So, I ask again......

What does she drive? Are her nails done? House or apartment? How big? Does she get child support? How many kids? Previous husband?

i think somone said something about walking a mile in their shoes, once upon a time ?

i think most people would welcome help with medical bills, so a fund or collection for that purpose would be my best guess.

also, some of us probably think, how could she not afford lunch ? but it might not be that simple; she might feel she shouldn't spend money on herself when her daughter needs it more, or she has obligations to doctors, etc. it could be a way of coping with something too big for one person, she can't make everything right, so she punishes herself.

people should help each other.

I have no idea on how to make giving $/food and not look like a handout?!

Suggestions?

Give her a "merit" bonus in the form of gift certificates to local grocery chains.

Actually I'm sitting down. You self identified as a member of a party that participates heavily in corporate handouts. Democrats do it too.
