I am looking to purchase an LCD monitor but unfortunatly Not every model I find online is at local stores so I can actually go see it perform.
Here is a list of what it needs to have and what I would perfer it to have.

*needs*
-17" or 19"
-thin bezel!
-bright clear screen
-good resolution & response time
-both DVI and VGA
-Major brands (such as samsung, sony, phillips, etc)

*wants*
-prefer a silver color
-would love great movement of screen like on the HP f1503 and Phillips 190B4CS!
-possibly lanscape and portrait screen swivels
-prefer no internal speakers

my budget is $650!!!
All help is greatly appreciated!!! If I end up puchasing a monitor someone here recommends I'll send them a paypal for 2% of the final cost ofthe monitor with shipping!

I'd suggest a Dell 1800FP. It's 18", so in the middle of the size that you are looking for. Its meets all of your needs (unless you are strict about the size) plus it has no built in speakers. Its a simple monitor with no real extra features but it performs very well and they is never any ghosting. Dell.

I use a dual monitor setup with a Samsung 191t and a Planar PX191. I like the Planar much better. It has all the same features and seems to be brighter and have better contrast. I think its because it uses the same panel as the 192t. The Planar which I would highly recommend is slightly out of your budget however at $692 unless you happen to have some dell coupons.

In your budget I would recommend the Dell 1901FP. It has slightly better specs than the 191t and cost less. It has both inputs and it pivots. Just bought one for my mom and I thought about keeping it and giving her my 191t. It does not come with pivot software but that is easily remedied by using Omega drivers, Nvidia drivers or downloading pivot pro which is what the 191t uses.

Edit: Also Dell has a great return policy just in case you get a couple dead pixels.

The Dell 1800FP & 2001FP will not meet your

"-would love great movement of screen like on the HP f1503 and Phillips 190B4CS!
-possibly lanscape and portrait screen swivels"

requirements. My 1900FP is pretty rigid, not much movement at all.

The fastest response time for gaming is currently only available in certain 17" models. The Dell UltraSharp 2001FP 21" which as said is slightly over your budget may be worth compromising for.

But the only one I can think of that matches all of your needs and wants is the Viewsonic VP171s.

If you are willing to compromise:
by having integrated speakers Planar PX171M-S.
by having lower response time Samsung 173P or else go into the realm of 19" 'ers.
by not having portrait Samsung 172X (however you would have to ensure getting the variety with the faster response time).
by not having portrait or a major brand Hercules ProphetView 920 Pro DVI.

thanks for all the help guys!
Right now i am leaning towards the Viewsonic VP171s or Nec 1760NX for the 17" models
and the 191T+ for the 19" models

Looks like I am going with the Viewsonic VP171B which Jojo7 recommended first. In the end I decided I would rather pay $150 less from the samsung for a 17" and the Viewsonic had better contrast and the portrait view so there we go! I should be purchasing in 2 days and have already contacted Jojo7 asking for his Paypal account for the cash reward......
Thanks to everyone who helped out! Greatly appreciated!!!!!!!

I did a lot of research recently and was likewise considering a Samsung but with the delays and higher prices compared to Dell's offerings I ended up with a VP171b also and was not dissapointed. Is that also why you chose the black in lieu of silver model?

actually no, i would much prerfer the silver model but I don't think it is sold in the US? I looked at maybe 3 dozens online sites that sewll the silver and they are all in the UK, also newegg is selling it for the best price and they only have the black.

That res. is exaggerated. Most of the 16ms monitors (viewsonic, hitachi, nec, planar) use the same Au panel. Also the colors on those panels are crap compared to the samsung/dell.

Personally I would scrounge up the dough for a bigger screen. 17" is just too small for me. I have a Samsung 192t and love it. I now prefer it over my Mitsubishi Diamon Pro 2040u and Sony G520P. Both of which are 21". I think the next thing I get will be a 20" or larger LCD.

While the 192t is a little over your budget and doesn't have the portrait feature I think its worth it. If not that, then get a 191t+.

($650 * .02) / 15 replies = $0.86?

Seriously though, no need to put "CASH REWARD!!!" in the title. We are all here, willing to help, free of charge:).

J & R has the silver one for $569.88 plus $18 shipping, less 2% ebates, less $100 rebate. Final cost: $476.12

Versus Newegg's blackie for $514 (499 + 15) sans rebates and likewise assuming no tax.

Rofl.

I just checked back at this thread and I had no idea I "won".

I got a private message from someone asking for my paypal account, but I just figured it was a scammer or something. I was > < close to writing a nasty response to the guy for trying to scam me. Heh.

But anyway, I could never take the money. I'm just glad I could help! I own the vp171b and it's amazing.

I would have accepted and donated it to charity.
