Found an injured squirrel in my back yard

I let our dog out this morning and he would not stop barking. I went to see what it was and found a very small squirrel on a tile with a bit of blood around it. It seems to have fallen out of a tree. It was still moving and even tried to do a self defensive jump type thing when it noticed me nearby but it was a feeble attempt :(

Upon closer inspection it was a bit shaky and had blood around the nose/mouth area. Unfortunately I was already running late so I left a message with the animal service people to come take care of it. Did a quick Google and read that they like flax seeds, so I put out some whole flax seed bread and water for it then left around 9:30am

I come home around 2pm and its still there, I guess they didn't get to my message yet or something. Bit of the bread was gone and the water was spilled, flies were starting to gather around it and I didn't notice it moving anymore :(

I went to get some gloves and a box to put it into thinking it was surely dead, to my surprise however it was still fighting! I got some old t-shirts, made a soft spot in the box and cut some air vents for it. Scooped the little guy up and put it in a dark corner outside, (its 30~C outside so I'm sure it'll be warm enough).

Left another message to the wildlife animal care people saying I'd drive it to them if needed and hoping for a return call now.

edit: forgot to mention that as I was putting it in the box a big squirrel (probably the mom) came around and got within a couple of feet off me, sniffed around the place where the injured one was and took off.

UPDATE

Got a call back and took it to the Wild Animal Center a couple of hours ago. Here's a crappy pic of it in the box and the dog that found it.. (yes it's a shitsu - its my gf's dog :p).

Love and Relationships? Are you having sex with the squirrel or something? Where I live if squirrels die like that on daily basis thanks to cats guns etc, I wouldn't get too broken up about it.

Are you fucking kidding me?

It's a dying squirrel and you're calling animal service? WHY?

I would have yelled at the squirrel while holding my 30-30

"You have 3 seconds, exactly 3 seconds to get your bleeding broken ass off my porch or I will blow you away!!! 1, 2 ,3 BOOM DEAD!!!"

:p

You've done a very nice thing. I hate seeing animals in pain. You should be very proud of your actions.

lol

So letting it sit there half dead is a nice thing vs. quickly killing it? I doubt it lives much longer.

I just kill then.. Better than them laying there suffering. A pellet gun shot through the eyes will do fine.
