It's a seminal work in the genre, intelligent and pretty damn funny in places.

I like 900 page books, makes me feel like I got my money's worth. I believe the one you are referring too is Cryptonomicon. That is probably my favorite book ever. I just love the way the guy writes most of the time.

The rest of the book is not written in "the deliverator " style. The story mostly consists of sword fights, Gatling gun duels, VR and Hiro trying to stop an ancient Summarian cognitive plague delivered digitally.

Snowcrash was the first Neal Stephenson novel I read. After those first two chapters, I remember thinking what the hell did I just read and then what the hell would the rest of the novel be like! Definitely an author who is a bit of an acquired taste.

Very entertaining author. My favorite is The Baroque Cycle trilogy. I don't mind the book length.

I find myself making excuses not to read really long books - Anathem and Cryptonimicon were both great despite my reservations. I recently enjoyed Seveneves (although I would have really liked more depth in the time span before the final act).

Snowcrash was my introduction to cyberpunk, which quickly led down the path to Gibson.
